The new second generation Maruti Ertiga is powered by a brand new 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 105PS of max power and 138Nm of peak torque. The diesel motor continues to be the same 1.3-litre unit that makes 89PS of maximum power and 200Nm of peak torque. Both the engines are mated to a 5-speed MT, while the petrol engine is available with a 4-speed automatic transmission as well. The claimed mileage figures for the new Ertiga are 19.34kmpl (petrol MT), 18.69kmpl (petrol AT) and 25.47kmpl (Diesel MT). The Maruti Ertiga Handles well on the bad road as well, thanks to its 180mm ground clearance. Maruti has looked after the aggressive ergonomics of the 2nd gen Maruti Ertiga and it seems to be worked out pretty well.

  • Q. Hi, How is the performance of petrol engine vs diesel? Expected realistic fuel economy. - Ertiga 2018?

    Zigwheels | 11 months ago

The 1.3-litre diesel unit under the hood of the Ertiga gets tuning similar to the Ciaz and the S-Cross. Having a variable geometry turbo instead of a fixed one, the engine produces 90PS of power at 4,000rpm and 200Nm of peak torque at 1,750 rpm. Twist the ignition key and the engine settles down into a very refined idle, with very little of it audible inside the cabin. The unit feels most comfortable and happy during relaxed cruising on the highway, but driving in the city reveals the serious lack of punch at lower revs. But once the turbo kicks in post the 2,000rpm mark, there is a strong surge, accompanied by an even spread of power, and the motor doesn’t let you complain. The smooth-shifting five-speed gearbox, combined with a light clutch will come as relief for the driver. We quite liked the refinement levels that are better than most other UVs. The unit does get fairly loud when revved hard, but under normal driving conditions, it’s reasonably smooth for a diesel. on the other hand, the Ertiga was the first car to get the K14 1.4-litre petrol engine, which is nothing but a bigger version of the Swift’s 1.2 K-Series. The 1,373cc unit produces 93PS of power at 6,000 rpm and 130Nm of torque @ 4,000 rpm, and shows the same kind of characteristics as its younger sibling. It remains quiet at most instances and comes across as smooth and swift under hard acceleration. Low-end power is the strongest point of the Ertiga petrol. Throttle response at low rpms is commendable. The mid-range performance, unlike the diesel, is flat and forces you to frequently downshift to stay in the meat of the powerband. Overall, the Ertiga petrol is best at lower rpms, average between 2,500–4,000 rpm, and enjoys cruising post that. If you are traveling less than 50-60km a day, opt for a petrol car instead of a diesel. With the extra Rs 1-1.50 lakh spent on a diesel purchase, you can actually drive a similar petrol car for as many as two years! So, do your math carefully. A diesel usually makes sense if you are driving above 60/70km a day.

  • Q. Dzire and Ertiga, which is the best for performance, maintenance, features?
    Zigwheels
    Zigwheels | 8 months ago

The new Ertiga is based on Suzuki’s Heartect platform, which Maruti says is more rigid yet lightweight than the previous platform. The new platform is the same one that underpins the current Dzire and Swift. There is a noticeable improvement in the way the Ertiga maintains a straight line on highways at higher speeds, and one of the reasons for it could be the new chassis. Since we managed to drive it mostly on straight roads, we’re not sure how good or bad the body roll is when compared to the older version, or how much feedback the steering offers. The other noticeable improvement is in the way it dismisses road uncertainties. There is a firmness in the suspension setup compared to the older version, but it’s just enough to not make the ride bumpy. The car settles down quickly after negotiating a bad patch and that should keep third-row occupants more happy in the new Ertiga than in the older model. It’s also good to see the suspension (front) not crashing when hitting a big pothole the way it did in the first-gen model. The claimed ARAI mileage for the Maruti Ertiga petrol is 19 kmpl, and for the Maruti Ertiga diesel is 25 kmpl.Maruti Suzuki has widened the appeal of the Dzire by having ironed out the major shortcomings of the previous Swift Dzire – interior space and looks. The new Dzire looks premium inside-out and has enough equipment to match its appeal. However, the lower variants are still competitive and it now comes with ABS and airbags as standard. Compact sedans don’t get any more polished than this. A spacious cabin, comfortable ride, feel-good features and a hassle-free ownership experience - the Dzire promises it all. The claimed ARAI mileage for the Maruti Dzire petrol is 22 kmpl, and for the Maruti Dzire diesel is 28 kmpl.Do take the test drive for both the cars in order to pick the best as per your needs and requirements.

If your monthly average is 2k a month, then go for petrol as you will not be driving enough for diesel engine to heat up and also by 2020, most of diesel cars are getting banned or you can say petrol will be cheaper n of good quality.
