The Thar remains one of the last of its kind – simple and tough with a capable 4x4 system. With the CRDe variant getting a more comfortable cabin and new locking differential, the Thar gets creature comforts for those looking for more than a bare bones SUV. Mahindra Thar CRDe is the top diesel variant in the Thar lineup. This variant comes with an engine putting out 105bhp@3800rpm and 247Nm@1800-2000rpm of max power and max torque respectively. The gasoline motor comes mated to 5 Speed Manual transmission which is quite a joy to use. Mahindra claims an average of 16.6 kmpl for this top CRDe variant. It can run up a maximum speed of 154kmph(Claimed) an d you can cruise it at around 100 to 120 without any fuss.

  • Q. Is Thar perfectly suitable for city usages?

No, we don't suggest you use Mahindra Thar for city drives because of the following reasons such as:- 1) It comes with an only diesel engine and diesel engine would be suggested only if your KMs is more then 60kms.2) Mahindra Thar is a very good vehicle of off- roads and has a 4 wheel drive option as well.3) If you use Mahindra Thar for daily use then it will be heavy on your pockets.

  • Q. We are looking to purchase a Thar CRDE. The usage would be a mixed bag of city, long distance and a bit of off-roading. I understand that there is no rear AC vent, does this mean that air circulation is hard for people at the back. Also, how is the rear suspension?

Hmmm.It is a good car.Pretty raw but you think it's nearly 1 year(approx) of waiting for newer version of thar as per bs6 norms. It would get abs,Airbags. So it would be much better than recent thar. Also I would suggest you to buy Ford EcoSport instead of buying thar because it has little bit off road ability. Also you will get a car for long journey.

  • Q. How is the performance on road - Thar?
    Zigwheels
    Zigwheels | 8 months ago

Performance figures are but purely academic for a vehicle of this nature. The Thar will hit 100 km/h from a standstill in 17.58 seconds – and that, considering the 4x4 top-end variant weighs all of 1750kg, is a great time indeed! The quarter-mile comes up in 20.94 seconds and it will touch a top whack of 138 km/h according to our instrumented test data. All that torque does show its presence even on the tarmac after all – a fact concluded after our roll-on test in which the Thar managed a 60-100 km/h acceleration in fourth gear in just 15.10 seconds. But when you’re in the Thar, do not engage yourself in traffic light GPs – this is a vehicle that you’ll well and truly enjoy simply rolling around town in third gear and enjoying the pull from the 2.5-litre motor at any rpm. Do take the test drive of the car to experience the thrill!

  • Q. How about the Thar Let me put a simple question if the Thar would be good in the highway too with good acceleration and torque and expecting good comfort.

If you are the sort of person who puts the ease of off-roading above practicality, features, safety and quality, then the Thar is the best sub Rs 10 lakh option for you. In other words, the Thar cannot pass as the sole family vehicle and can only be considered as a second or a third vehicle in the garage to utilise its specific deliverables. The Mahindra Thar CRDe is powered by a 2.5-litre diesel engine that makes 105PS of power and 247Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission. The Thar DI (both 2WD and 4WD) also gets a 2.5-litre diesel engine but it makes only 65PS of power and 195Nm of torque here and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Now that it gets a more comfortable cabin and a locking differential, it appeals more to the offroading enthusiast who wanted a better place to sit in to do the dirty business. If you often go for long rides, opt for CRDe variant as it gets better power on the other hand, DI 4WD would be a better pick for off-roading.

  • Q. If you compare Isuzu v cross 4x4 vs Thar 4x4. Which is best on road and off road ?which one should i go with?
    Arun
    Arun | 1 year ago

The Thar is better off-road because of the shorter overhangs and better approach, and departure angles. That said, the V-Cross is miles better to drive on road. If you're looking at something that strikes a balance between on- and off-road, pick the Isuzu.
