The 5th-gen Honda CR-V has been launched in three variants. The quintessential softroader promises more space, more luxury, more tech along with a very important diesel engine and 7-seats.
The new Honda CR-V may look similar to the car it replaces but is actually longer (both wheelbase and overall) and wider. In fleshthough, the CR-V's all-LED lighting, tasteful use of chrome, muscular arches and 18-inch alloy wheels add a sense of premiumness and occasion not seen in the older car.
Inside, the CR-V oozes quality (you can check out our review for a full lowdown) without going overboard with design details. Highlights here include the new 7-inch centre infotainment screen and the 7-inch instrument cluster, the former gets modern smartphone connectivity options like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also gets a lane change display which utilises a camera placed on the left side ORVM to give you a better view of the road behind and avoid craning your neck to the side which changing lanes to the left. The diesel variants don't feature a traditional gear-level at all! Instead, the centre console gets buttons for the Drive, Neutral, Reverse and Parking transmission modes.
While the front seats are wide, tall and very supportive, the 2nd-row row seats lack under-thigh support. The 2nd-row passengers in the diesel variant will grumble even more as the headroom is compromised by the roof-mounted A/C unit for the 3rd-row passengers.
While the CR-V diesel does get 3rd-row seats, they are best reserved for children or for adults on very short journeys. Thankfully, these seats do fold flat into the floor for a convenient luggage space.
The CR-V is finally offered with a diesel motor, this is an EarthDreams 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-diesel developing 120PS of power and 300Nm of peak torque. Paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission with either AWD or 2WD drivetrains, the CR-V diesel is not particularly quick. But the whole setup is all about efficiency than outright performance, claimed mileage is 18.3kmpl for the AWD variant and 19.5kmpl for the 2WD variant.
If you want to have fun driving the CR-V then you better get the petrol varaint powered by the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder iVTEC motor developing 154PS and 189Nm paired to a CVT and exclusively with 2WD drivetrain.
The pricing brings it closer to SUVs like the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, Volkswagen Tiguan and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. Check out the full review of the new CR-V here.
