Volvo's new generation engines promise a lot. The Swedish carmaker will now offer four petrol engines and four diesels under its Drive-E engine umbrella. These new engines are set to be introduced on the recently unveiled 2015 Volvo V40.
Customers can now choose between a D4 oil-burner delivering 188PS of power or a T5 twin-turbocharged petrol engine producing 242PS of power. According to Volvo, the D4 engine uses a new Denso-developed system of injector pressure sensors which helps in better fuel metering for smoother running and cleaner exhaust emissions.
According to Volvo, under test conditions the 2015 Volvo V40 D4 offers fuel economy figures of 30kmpl.The new car can sprint from 0-100kmph in just 6.8 seconds with a top-speed of 225kmph.
An eight-speed automatic transmission is offered as an option throughout the Drive-E lineup. This gearbox is however best suited if coupled to the revamped T5 twin-turbocharged petrol engine. According to Volvo, under test conditions a T5 powerplant mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission will offer fuel-efficiency figures of 18kmpl.
The new Drive-E engines will be manufactured in Sweden. The Swedish carmaker also has plans to build these engines in China.
