Will it bridge the gap between the 790 and the 1050 platforms or will it be solely intended as a variant for the 790 Duke?

  • The new engine is reportedly a rebored version of the existing 799cc LC8c platform.
  • It could be used to bring out a new supermoto or a more powerful version of the 790 Duke.
  • Expect the brand to show a prototype model at the 2019 EICMA.

KTM seems to be going on an all-out platform onslaught. After reports of the Austrian brand working on a 500cc twin-cylinder motorcycle for markets like India came out recently, rumours are now surfacing that KTM is working on a bigger 890cc parallel-twin platform. Asphalt and Rubber reports that the new platform will use a rebored version of the current 799cc LC8c engine. This development opens up a range of possibilities for the brand.

It is possible that the new platform will be used to make a supermoto. At present, KTM only has the 690 SMC R, and the 693cc single isn’t exactly future-proof as far as emissions are concerned. Moreover, a parallel-twin motor offers better refinement and more linear power delivery compared to singles. It is possible that KTM would bring out a supermoto based on this engine to rival the new Ducati Hypermotard 950, Aprilia Dorsoduro 900 and the likes.
Another likelihood is that the engine might be used solely for the R variant of the 790 Duke. The existing 799cc LC8c parallel-twin is one of the sportiest twins we’ve seen in quite some time, and if KTM brings out an R variant it would take the middleweight Duke’s capabilities to a whole new level. Or, will KTM use the new platform to revive the legendary RC8? Only time will tell.

But as far as the adventure segment is concerned, KTM is working on the 390 Adventure, and the 790 Adventure is already being sold in the global market. It doesn't really make sense for KTM to bring about a 890 Adventure as the brand already has 1090cc and 1290cc platforms for riders craving for more power.

We believe KTM might show a prototype at the 2019 EICMA, with the production model likely to slated for the following year.
