The MPV gets captain seats, sliding doors and a flat-bottom steering wheel

  • Various reports suggest it might be based on the Kia Carnival.
  • It is expected to be priced at 200,000 yuan in China (Rs 20 lakh).
  • We might be looking at a possible Innova Crysta rival if it ever comes to India.

Hyundai seems to be planning to foray into the people carrier space with a luxury MPV that was spied testing in China. It is claimed to be a mid to high-end MPV with a target price of 200,000 yuan (Rs 20 lakhs when converted). But what we want to know is whether it will find its way into India and is it based on the upcoming Kia Carnival?

Well, various reports suggest that it might be based on the Kia MPV. And there are some reasons to believe so. Firstly, the MPV in question is similar in size to the Carnival. The overall silhouette and the footprint are very close to the Carnival. Further cementing the speculation is the presence of sliding doors and a very spacious and luxurious cabin. Although heavily camouflaged, we can make out that it gets plush captain seats and a fancy flat-bottom steering wheel similar to the one in the 2020 Sonata.

Going by these, the MPV might after all be based on the Carnival. Nevertheless, it is definitely not an entry/mid-level MPV that will rival the Triber, Ertiga or the Marazzo. In all likelihood, the Hyundai MPV will be aimed squarely at the Innova Crysta, if it makes its way into India. Mechanical details are scarce at the moment and we’ll only receive more information as time marches forward. The heavy camouflage is also not doing any favours either, but we could make out the huge grille and an alloy wheel design that is now omnipresent in Hyundai models.

As of now, there is no news about the spied Hyundai MPV in the pipeline for India. But, if it turns out to be based on the Carnival, Hyundai might offer it here in the distant future. Hyundai and Kia are sister companies. While the upcoming Creta is based on the Seltos, Kia’s QYI sub-4 metre SUV will be based on the Venue. In other news, the Kia Carnival is all set for a launch at the upcoming Auto Expo.
