Honda Cars India and Juana Technologies have brought the India Innovate -- Wheels to Fly initiative to the country. Two competitions will be held for school children to introduce them to planes and cars. Younger students of classes 4 and 5 will get to build glider aircraft. Students in classes 6 to 10 will build cars. The initiative aims to expose children to automotive concepts and to inspire them for careers in technical fields.
For the Race to the Line competition, the children will design, build, and test a rocket-powered car. “Teams develop, apply and master their understanding of the laws of motion, forces, aerodynamics and coding in this challenge that covers all elements of combined STEM subjects,” says Honda.
Two teams will be selected from each school to compete at the Regional Level. Four teams will go on to compete in the National competition. The winners of this competition stand a chance to set the Guinness World Record for the fastest rocket-powered model car.
The Fly to the Line competition is no less fun. Younger schoolchildren will get to utilize their imagination to design a model glider aircraft. Teams of 3 will compete to create the farthest-flying aircraft. Two teams from each school will be picked for the Regional round, but only two will make it to the National finale.
“The India Innovate – Wheels to Fly is a globally acclaimed STEM based competition which will help us to connect with thousands of students across the country,” said Rajesh Goel, the Senior Vice President and Director of Marketing and Sales at Honda. The initiative began in England in 2015. It was then introduced to Wales and Scotland. It was held in Hong Kong, U.A.E., China and Vietnam before being introduced in India this year.
The initiative aims to inspire young minds for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). “Students will be able to apply concepts like aerodynamic design which plays a very important role in developing mobility products,” Goel elaborates. We hope students thus exposed are more likely to make a nuanced decision when they choose an STEM field for further education.
