FIA Formula One Race Director, Safety Delegate, Permanent Starter and head of the F1 Technical Department, Charlie Whiting was in Delhi recently for a thorough inspection of the Jaypee International Formula One Racing Circuit in Noida, where the first Formula One Race ever to be held in India will take place October 30th this year.
With work on the circuit progressing steadfast and well ahead of schedule, Whiting, who has been associated with Formula One technical and safety standards since 1988 was extremely pleased with the progress that had been made on the site.
With its granular hard court surface now being completed and the run off areas for corners also nearing completion, laying of the tarmac for the track will commence on the 15th of March.
Work on the service roads for the public entering the circuit along the Yamuna expressway are also well under way, and should be complete ahead of second phase of the circuit’s next inspection.
Vicky Chandhok, President of the Federation of Motorsports Clubs of India (FMSCI), was present along with members of the Gaur family, the key promoters of the Indian Grand Prix. On the occasion of Whiting’s visit to the Jaypee track, Sameer Gaur, Managing Director of JPSI, said, “The progress since Charlie’s last visit has been fairly rapid and all of us including Whiting are very pleased with the way things stand at the moment and we are looking forward to the first Indian GP. The JPSIL F1 track will be complete ahead of schedule!”
The Formula 1 Race Director and his team are expected to make several such visits to the site over the next few months to monitor its progress and ensure its scheduled completion. With the final Formula 1 inspection slated for 30th June 2011, the Indian Grand Prix looks certain to be one of the country’s sporting spectacles of 2011 and a delight for the teams and Indian audiences alike.
