A strike called by the transport wing of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) could affect those relying on cab aggregator services, especially Uber and Ola. The strike has been called by the MNS union to protest the lower returns and allegations of mismanagement by these companies. Earlier, such calls for strikes fizzled out as it was detrimental for business and did not usually result in any benefits for the drivers.
In a report, Sanjay Naik of MNVS claimed, “Ola and Uber had given big assurances to the drivers, but today they are unable to cover their costs. They have invested Rs 5-7 lakh and were expecting to make Rs 1.5 lakh a month. But drivers are unable to even make half of this because of the mismanagement by these companies.” The claims of mismanagement include decreasing the share of fares for drivers, increasing targets for incentives, preferential treatment of drivers, etc.
While the call for a strike is supported in spirit by other unions across major cities in the country, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, some accounts from residents in these cities seem to suggest the strike is most prevalent in Mumbai. This could be because Sanjay Naik is reported to have said, “We will request him (drivers not striking) with folded hands... If he does not listen, we will handle it MNS-style”.
The call for the strike follows reports of Ola drivers in Nagpur being disgruntled over the Mahindra e2o cabs that they were driving being unfeasible in the long run. The long charge times and a shortage of charging stations have resulted in lower returns, forcing many to switch to diesel-powered alternatives.
