Tata Electric Scooter Launch In 2025: Rumour Or Reality highlights

Recently, there’s been a viral post doing rounds on social media, stating that Tata is all set to launch an electric scooter, likely in August 2025, to rival Ola Electric and Bajaj Auto.

The post goes at length about how the e-scooter will be packed with features, but goes on to explain very generic ones including “full digital dashboard”, “LED headlights & tail lamps”, “alloy wheels & tubeless tyres” to name a few. It then continues with very PR-centric phrases, possibly even ChatGPT-written content - “The mix of technology and practicality shows Tata’s commitment to delivering a premium riding experience at an affordable price”.

It then proceeds to “speculate” oddly specific aspects such as a 3.5kWh battery pack offering a 200km range, and an estimated price of Rs 1-1.2 lakh. The post is cleverly peppered with phrases like “expected to”, “could be”, “reports suggest” without giving any solid justification to their speculation nor revealing any source material.

Do you see where this is going? Most of the comments to the post were positive, and barely anyone called it out for the grade-A nonsense it was spewing. It isn’t surprising because most of the consumers of the post were just regular readers who lack the context to see through this clearly made-up story. Any speculative content regarding an Indian brand venturing out into the unknown with sky-high hopes gets applauded automatically. We think this is because the dream in itself is what seems to matter rather than the logistics of the whole thing. Obviously the latter needs a proper understanding of the automotive industry and automotive technology to scrutinize properly. Online pages often take advantage of this and come up with fake news that generates lots of engagement.

Simply put, the post is just a baseless rumour. Tata has not announced anything of this sort. The company also does not have a production facility that can make two-wheelers, and that the image is AI generated. A more detailed explanation as to why this is fake news is as follows:

Tata Electric Scooter Launch In 2025: Rumour Or Reality overview

Have you ever seen any Indian legacy manufacturer in the country dabbling on both two AND four-wheelers? A huge company like Tata is very well established in the electric four-wheeler segment, that too with the necessary first-mover advantage with its best-selling Tata Nexon EV range. The two-wheeler industry is much more volume-driven to have a comparable profitability, and right now Tata isn’t really losing out on anything as a company. A drastic step like this might only make sense for a company that’s struggling to sell their core products (read: passenger cars - both ICE and EV, as well trucks and buses), and is looking to claw its way out of a desperate situation by trying out radically different things.

Moreover, the Indian electric scooter segment is already fairly developed with several well-established players such as Ather Energy, TVS and Bajaj dominating the space. Why would Tata want to jump into a segment in which it has no first-mover advantage? Ather, Bajaj and TVS spent years to get their product right - both in terms of engineering and pricing. Even if Tata were to jump into the segment, it will not be able to price its debut two-wheeler competitively. This is because Tata will have to invest heavily to set up infrastructure from scratch, invest even more in research, development, testing and some more testing. It’s also prudent to note that all the popular manufacturers right now had the necessary initial drive in the form of subsidies that made them a more compelling buy for the aam junta.

Lastly, if Tata were to jump into the two-wheeler world, it would have definitely made an announcement, most likely with a local player so that the company is able to get the basics right. This is pretty common, and is often the right way to go about things. Look at Triumph and Bajaj’s partnership, or even the TVS-BMW Motorrad marriage for that matter. To set foot into uncharted territory, it’s always better to have a helping hand to get the scale of manufacturing and operations in general right. Moreover, the supply chain for electric two-wheelers is different from electric four-wheelers, with its strongest presence in Karnataka. Tata’s Dharwad plant in the state caters only to commercial vehicles, so obviously, it will have to set up a two-wheeler facility from scratch. There have been no such reports about this either.

Tata as a company is doing pretty well for itself in terms of its car sales. In fact, in February 2025 it had the third largest share in the passenger vehicles segment at 12.75%, coming in just behind Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra & Mahindra. Even its affordable subcompact SUV, the Punch, punched above its weight to overtake Suzuki Wagon R to become the best-selling car in 2024. So no, Tata is not going to dabble into the two-wheeler industry, let alone the electric two-wheeler segment.
