No riding gears? No problem, this new invention will soon make commuting on scooters much safer

When it comes to airbags, most riders think of cars. But a company called Autoliv, is now pushing this concept for bikes as well. The brand supplies nearly 40 percent of the world’s car airbags and seatbelts, so it is a well-known brand. Its latest invention? A detachable motorcycle airbag that can continue protecting the rider even after being thrown off the vehicle.

How Does It Work?

The system is surprisingly simple. A compact tube-shaped unit is mounted near the handlebar and houses the folded airbag, inflator, and gas generator. If sensors detect a crash, the airbag deploys instantly, creating a protective cushion between the rider and the impact. But here’s the clever bit: once deployed, the airbag breaks free from the scooter and stays attached to the rider. This means protection doesn’t end when the rider leaves the vehicle.

Unlike conventional airbags that remain fixed to the vehicle, Autoliv’s design wraps around the rider’s upper body. It covers the head and torso while looping around the shoulders and under the arms to stay in place. So even if a rider is flung off the scooter, the airbag could continue cushioning secondary impacts.

Why Scooters Make Sense

This technology has already appeared on the Yamaha Tricity 300 overseas, and scooters are arguably the perfect platform for it. After all, scooters are mostly used in crowded cities where collisions with cars are more common. Since commuters often skip riding gear, a built-in airbag could offer an extra layer of safety without requiring riders to wear special equipment.

Better Than Airbag Jackets?

Airbag jackets and vests are already available, but they depend on riders actually wearing them. Autoliv’s solution removes that extra step.

While it may not be as securely attached as a wearable airbag vest, it appears to offer much larger coverage. Whether it provides better protection remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: this could be a major step towards making everyday two-wheeler commuting safer.

ZigSays

Autoliv's innovation aims at significantly enhancing two-wheeler rider’s protection in a segment where safety advancements have been limited. For the average scooter buyer, the introduction of airbags will be a significant change. Initially, the technology will likely be offered as an optional feature on high-end petrol scooters and new-generation electric models. A tangible price premium for airbag-equipped variants can be expected.
