If latest paddock rumours are to be believed we can see a new factory team entering the premiere class of racing. It is reported that BMW Motorrad is planning to make its MotoGP debut and reportedly they have signed rider Marco Melandri for testing the prototype GP machine. But the above news is a bit disputed as BMW CEO Stephan Schaller had announced earlier this year that BMW has no plans of entering MotoGP as it doesn’t see the sense in spending millions of dollars as it focuses its attention on road-going two-wheelers.
But the fact that MotoGP has a huge following on a global level and presence in the premiere class of racing gives the brand the kind of reach that few other motorsports event could match. Also many technologies that were developed for GP bikes have made their way into production bikes in the past few years and this could be among the reasons for it to consider entering the premiere class.
Like Schaller KTM boss Stefan Pierer also had a similar thought about MotoGP two years back but as we know KTM will be making its official entry to MotoGP next year. Currently Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Aprilia and Ducati are the factory teams on the start grid and if BMW makes its debut only Kawasaki and MV Agusta remains the major two-wheeler manufacturer to be not present in the premiere class.
