The Volvo XC90 recently underwent the European New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) and has managed to achieve a 5-star rating. The Euro NCAP carries out crash tests with new car models and assesses their safety.

The Euro NCAP awards ratings to cars after determining the amount of protection that a car can provide to its passengers in the event of a crash. The XC90 has become the first automobile in the world to score full points in Euro NCAP Autonomous Emergency Braking Car to Car rear-end tests (AEB City & AEB Interurban); and this City Safety technology is standard in the XC90. The XC90 also features advanced pedestrian protection functionality that independent safety regulators have yet to include in their testing protocols.

Commenting on this achievement, Peter Mertens, Senior Vice-President, Research and Development, Volvo Car Group, said, “This is further proof that with Volvo XC90 we have developed one of the safest cars in the world. In fact we scored one hundred per cent in the Safety Assist category. From an industry perspective Volvo Cars remains the leader in car safety innovation and miles ahead of the competition with our standard safety offer.”

The XC90 is powered by Volvo’s new generation Drive-E engine. This SUV is equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine which punches out out an impressive 228PS of power and 470Nm of torque. The XC90 comes mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox that is also standard across its line-up.

In India, the SUV is offered in two variants - the Momentum and Inscription which has slightly different exterior design to separate the two. The interior of the 2015 Volvo XC90 is extremely elegant with just a handful of buttons (eight to be precise) and a portrait style 9-inch touchscreen.

The XC90 Momentum trim comes with keyless entry, panoramic sunroof, electrically operated bootlid, cornering headlights, rear camera, hill decent control, 12.3-inch instrument cluster, tyre pressure monitor, park assist front and rear sensors and a navigation system.

The Volvo XC90 retails in India at a price tag of Rs 64.9 lakh, (ex-showroom Delhi) for the Momentum variant and Rs 77.9 lakh for the Inscription variant.
