Kawasaki, Triumph and Honda will have some tough competition ahead

Yamaha is the only Japanese manufacturer that hasn’t brought any high capacity bikes from its lineup to India. Now with the launch of the Yamaha MT-03 and R3, it seems like the brand is working on making a change.

In 2024, Yamaha is all set to enter into the premium middle-weight motorcycle segment by bringing the Yamaha R7, MT-07 and the MT-09 in India and this was confirmed in a dealership event.

The Yamaha MT-07 is a streetfighter and the R7 is a supersport, both bikes are powered by a 689cc liquid-cooled, In-line twin engine which produces 73.4PS at 8750rpm and 67Nm at 6500rpm. The MT-07 is expected to be priced around Rs 8 to 9 lakh and will go up against the Kawasaki Z650, Honda CB650R and Triumph Trident 660.

The Yamaha R7 being the faired sibling of the MT-07 might come at a higher price, somewhere around Rs 9-10 lakh and it will be competing against the Honda CBR650R, Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the upcoming Triumph Daytona 660

The MT-09 is one of the most powerful bikes in Yamaha’s lineup and it comes with a 847cc liquid-cooled 3-cylinder crossplane engine that produces 115PS at 1000rpm and 87.5 Nm at 8500rpm. It is likely to be priced at Rs 13 lakh. It will rival the Ducati Monster, Kawasaki Z900, Triumph Street Triple RS and the BMW F 900 R.

As enthusiasts, it’s exciting to see Yamaha back in the game when it comes to the big bike segment. Afterall, it was the first litre-class bike to be officially launched in India, way back in 2009. It even brought the insane Yamaha V-Max and the mad Yamaha MT-09 years later.  Triumph, Honda and Kawasaki certainly have a lot to worry about, don’t you think?
