Mahindra Thar 5-door To Get Better Stopping Power Than Smaller 3-door Model

Each and every time a test mule of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-door test mule has been spotted, there is something new that we can discern from it. This time around, the larger off-roader has been spotted with upgraded braking hardware when compared to the smaller three-door model. Here’s all the dope:

To compensate for the larger size and additional weight, Mahindra will be offering the Thar 5-door with rear disc brakes, a feature that isn’t available with the 3-door version. The smaller SUV, rather, relies on drum brakes for its rear wheels. The updated hardware should offer better stopping power, but that’s something we’ll reserve until we get our hands on the SUV. 

Updates to the Thar 5-door won’t be limited to just better stopping power. It will get minor differentiating design elements to stand out from the smaller Thar 3-door. The Thar 5-door will be offered with the smaller model’s 150PS 2-litre turbo-petrol and 130PS 2.2-litre diesel engine, probably with a bit more power. It should be offered with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. As for drivetrains, it should come with both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive (with a low range transfer case). 

The Mahindra Thar 5-door is expected to be launched on our shores later this year. And it’s expected to be priced above the smaller Thar 3-door, which starts from Rs 11.25 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched, it will be a larger alternative to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and will lock horns with the upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door.
