The Toyota crossover will have more commonalities than differences than the Fronx

UPDATE: Toyota India has launched the Urban Cruiser Taisor from Rs 7.74 lakh (ex-showroom)

The Toyota crossover, likely to be named the ‘Urban Cruiser Taisor’, is inching closer to its launch day by day. D Day has been set for April 3, but before the rebadged Maruti Fronx enters the market, we take a look at how it might vary from the original model.

Design changes

Going by the treatment given to other Toyota-Maruti rebadged products, the styling changes will be limited. The Taisor could get tweaks to its grille, along with new elements for the LED DRLs.

The side profile should be identical, save for the addition of new alloy wheels, while the rear could get different elements for the connected tail lights. Of course, it’ll sport the Toyota badge instead of the Suzuki emblem, but that is expected to be it in terms of visual revisions.

Cabin changes

No changes are expected in the overall layout. The dashboard, doors, and central console should follow the exact same orientation, but with a different colour scheme.

While the Maruti Fronx uses a darkish theme with black and brown elements, the Toyota could offer lighter shades. We expect a similar treatment as seen on the Baleno/Glanza duo. The colour theme is also expected to be extended to the seats.

Things should be identical on the features front with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a heads-up display, analogue dials with a multi-info display, cruise control, and automatic climate control.

The crossover SUV will likely be equipped with up to six airbags, electronic stability program (ESP), hill-hold assist, a 360-degree camera, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and ABS with EBD.

No changes are expected in the powertrain department. It should use the same 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (90PS and 113Nm) mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT, as well as a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine (100PS and 148Nm) paired with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Even the CNG option is expected to be carried over as it is, but that could be introduced at a later stage. While Maruti offers the Fronx in five ( Sigma, Delta, Delta+, Zeta, and Alpha) trim options, the Toyota crossover could be offered in just four (without the base trim).

Maruti Fronx Side ProfileSo the variant differences aside, changes between the Toyota Taisor and Maruti Fronx will be limited to a few exterior tweaks along with a new colour theme and cabin upholstery. Prices should also be in the similar ballpark as the Fronx, which is sold from Rs 7.51 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards, though a slight premium can be expected for Toyota’s equivalent variants. The Toyota Taisor will rival the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, and Mahindra XUV300.
