The new Hyundai Elite i20 has been launched at a starting price of Rs 4.89 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi for the base petrol variant. India is the first country to get the Elite i20 marking its significance here. Globally, the car will be launched in the coming monthsand will be an important product for Hyundai in Europe specifically. It will take on the recently updated Volkswagen Polo and Fiat Punto Evo, the Maruti Swift and the Honda Jazz in the premium hatchback segment in India.
The new Hyundai Elite i20 carries forward the engines from the outgoing car. The petrol is the 1.2-litre kappa mill that also powers the Grand i10 and Xcent. It develops 83PS of power and 115Nm of torque. The 90PS/220Nm 1.4-litre CRDi diesel is also the same. The petrol is mated to a 5-speed manual and the diesel to a six-speed box as before. At the launch, Hyundai isn’t offering an automatic just yet. While the Elite i20 seems the same as the outgoing car going by these specs, an all new chassis and suspension package and also a new design, inside and out are the main factors for this i20 to feel like an improvement over its predecessor.
Speaking of design, the Elite i20 does look a lot more premium than before. Bolder lines, larger lights front and rear with LED inserts, a larger trapezoidal grille and a wider stance with a stronger shoulderline characterize the new Hyundai Elite i20. The interiors too are new and get a lot of equipment as you move up the variants. Era, Magna, Sportz, Sportz with option pack and Asta – the same variants as before are part of the new Elite i20.
Besides the Era variant that’s basic enough to get only central locking, air conditioning and front power windows, all other variants are well kitted. From the Magna variant onwards, you get a two din audio system with 1GB of internal memory, steering mounted audio controls, rear AC vents, rear power windows, cooled glovebox and electrically adjustable ORVMs. The Elite i20 Sportz gets a driver side airbag and ABS, rear parking sensors, rear parking camera, climate control and electrically foldable mirrors. The Sportz option pack gets alloy wheels and a clutch lock. Move to the top spec variant and you get a passenger side airbag, auto headlamps and rear wipers.
The new Hyundai Elite i20 has an ARAI certified mileage of 18.6kmpl for the petrol and 22.54kmpl for the diesel - both base variants. The top spec variants with the 16 inch alloy wheels have ARAI figures of 18.24kmpl and 21.76kmpl for the petrol and diesel respectively.
