Two-wheeler sales figure for the month of August 2014 are out with all the major two-wheeler manufacturers in the country registering growth

August proved to be another fruitful month for two-wheeler manufacturers in the country. Sales report for the month of June 2014 is out and every manufacturer has reported a positive growth in terms of sales. Hero MotoCorp ruled the roost in terms of volumes, while Royal Enfield notched the highest percentage growth.   

Hero Karizma ZMR

August was yet another robust month for Hero MotoCorp with sales crossing the half million mark again. The country’s largest two-wheeler registered sales of 5,58,609 units in August 2014. Hero had managed to sell 4,59,996 units in August 2013 which translates to a growth of over 21 per cent in terms of sales. Hero is upbeat that it will be able to maintain the momentum heading into the festive season and has announced that it plans to launch 10 new offerings, upgrades and refreshes in the coming months. The latest offering from the stables of Hero would be the Splendor Pro Classic which is a cafe racer bike based on the commuter bike that was showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo.

TVS Scooty Zest

TVS Motor Company was the dark horse in terms of sales in August 2014 as it recorded 47 per cent growth in sales. TVS managed to sell 217,662 units in August 2014 with respect to the 1,48,449 units it sold in the same time period last year.  The hike in sales can be credited to scooters as the Hosur based manufacturer sold 67,240 units of scooters in August 2014 with respect to 36,478 units it managed in the corresponding month last year. Scooter sales growth stood at an impressive 84 per cent and with the recently launched TVS Scooty Zest it will be hoping to better its performance in September.

The country’s second largest two-wheeler manufacturer had yet another fabulous outing in terms of sale as Honda registered an overall growth of 25 per cent for the month of August2014. The Japanese two-wheeler giant registered an overall sales figure of 3,88,210 units of which 2,17,866 units were contributed by scooters. Honda also recorded its highest ever scooter sales for a single month. Honda’s Dream series of commuter motorcycles also breached the one million sales figure mark in August 2014. And with the launch of the CD 110 Dream (Honda’s cheapest motorcycle offering) it will be hoping that its motorcycle would increase in the following months. Honda also hiked its market share in the domestic market from 26 per cent in 2013 to 28 per cent in 2014. Honda has announced that it will be a launching a new 160cc offering in the festive season.

Bajaj Discover 150F and 150S

August wasn’t a very rewarding month for Bajaj Auto in terms of sales as it registered a two per cent growth in terms of sales. Although, the growth is measly, but given the situation between the manufacturer and its workers, Bajaj will be happy in registering positive growth. The Chakan based two-wheeler manufacturer managed to sell 2,84,302 units in August 2014 in comparison to the 2,78,583 units it sold in the corresponding month last year. Bajaj recently launched the Discover 150F and 150S on which it is betting big to register positive growth in the following months.

Yamaha FZ-S FI

Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd sustained its upward sales growth by recording a growth of 24 per cent. The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer was successful in selling 53,242 units in August 2014 with respect to 42,995 units it managed to sell in the corresponding month previous year. Yamaha added that the Alpha scooter and new variants under the FZ series - FZ Version 2.0 and FZ-S Version 2.0 have been instrumental in hiking its sales. 

Elaborating on the results, Roy Kurian, Vice President – Sales & Marketing, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd, said, “This month has seen only an extension of our continued success month after month. Our scooter offerings, especially ‘Alpha’, have been a catalyst in giving us good numbers in addition to our popular motorcycle lineup. The launches of FZ Version 2.0 and FZ-S Version 2.0 have further spurred our sales. Moreover, ahead of the festive season we are quite confident about continuing our growth story in the coming months as well with our innovative product line up and exciting customer engagement initiatives.”

Royal Enfield Continental GT

Riding high on the tremendous demand for its motorcycles, Royal Enfield registered sales of 26,643 units for August 2014 which is a humungous 66 per cent growth over the same period last year. Although, the numbers might look measly in comparison to sales of other major two0wheeler manufacturers but when factors in the fact that the cheapest Royal Enfield offering is over the Rs 1 lakh mark then the sales figure starts to look impressive. 

Mahindra Centuro Rockstar

Mahindra Two Wheelers Ltd. announced that it sold 12,598 units in August 2014 with domestic sales accounting for 11,178 units. Mahindra recently launched the Rodeo UZO 125 scooter and Centuro Rockstar commuter bike and plans to launch a new 110cc scooter in September. With these new offerings Mahindra is expecting sales to be further amplified in near future. 

Commenting on the performance, Viren Popli, Chief of Operations, Mahindra Two Wheelers said, “We have further enhanced our portfolio with the launch of exciting and differentiated product offerings like the Centuro Rockstar motorcycle and the Rodeo UZO 125 scooter, and are buoyed by the initial response to them. These two new product launches will be rolled out across our 1,400 sales and service touch points in the coming months. We are confident of significant growth in the upcoming festive season with the Centuro range, Rodeo UZO 125 and other differentiated products in our portfolio”.
