Italian motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta is expected to launch their bikes in India after a partnership with the Kinetic Group.

According to reports, an official statement about the collaboration between Pune-based Kinetic Engineering and the Italian maker of premium bikes is expected to be announced soon.

Kinetic, which sold its two wheeler business to Mahindra, is expected to set up a dealership network for MV Agusta under a separate business entity, within the Kinetic Group.

To begin with, MV Agusta is expected to bring in its premium bikes as CBUs, but the partnership with Kinetic means there could also be plans for CKD assembly of bikes in India.

After Triumph, Moto Guzzi, Aprilia, Benelli, BMW Motorrad and Ducati, MV Agusta is the latest European motorcycle brand to make its presence in India, a market which has seen tremendous growth of premium two wheelers.

The superbike market in India clocked over 50 per cent growth in the last fiscal alone. In 2013-14, as many as 3,500 superbikes were sold in India and this number is set to more than double in just over a year. By 2020, sales of superbikes are expected to hit 10,000 units. Triumph has already established itself as a leading premium motorcycle brand in India and now Ducati is betting big on India, planning to launch its entire range of superbikes here.

For MV Agusta too, which sells about 10,000 bikes every year globally, it makes sense to have a foothold in the Indian market.  MV Agusta’s motorcycles include the Brutale series, Stradale, Rivale, F3, F4 and Tourismo Veloce.

Ducati assembles their bikes in the Thailand plant and gets a price advantage in India and Triumph already has an assembly plant in Manesar, India. It’s one thing to have presence in a market, and quite another to make a mark and shore up some sales numbers. For now, there’s no word yet, which MV Agusta bikes will make their way to India, but a future CKD assembly plant will certainly make a lot of sense.
