The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) which is a co-operative industrial research association by the automotive industry with the Ministry of Industries, Government Of India has announced that it is planning to make ABS (anti-lock braking system) compulsory on two-wheelers. Under this initiative all two-wheelers in the country above 125cc displacement will have to offer ABS as a standard fitment. Currently ABS is available only in performance motorcycles in the country and mostly it’s an additional option. The cheapest motorcycle on sale in the Indian two-wheeler market with ABS is the TVS Apache RTR 180 on which ABS is an extra Rs 10,500 option. The only bike to feature ABS as a standard fitment under Rs two lakh is the KTM 390 Duke.
ARAI has forwarded this proposal to the Ministry and confirmation is awaited. If ABS is made mandatory expect the prices of two-wheeler increasing. But given the benefits it has on offer it’s seems to be a reasonable trade off. According to ARAI, ABS could be made mandatory as early as 2017 by when its facilities which is undergoing a revamp would also be ready.
The main purpose of ABS is to avoid the wheels from locking up during emergency braking which prevents the vehicle from skidding thereby reducing the possibility of a crash. ABS is more effective than standard brakes especially on slippery surfaces. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released a study in 2010 that found motorcycles with ABS 37 per cent less likely to be involved in a fatal crash than models without ABS. The European Union had made ABS a compulsory feature on cars since 2007 while in the US market it’s been mandatory since 2011 and we do hope it’s implemented in India also soon.
