Honda Jazz to cost 7 lakh

4 May 2009

Honda Jazz

The buzz about Honda Jazz is doing the rounds for quite sometime and Zigwheels has been giving you an exclusive coverage of the same-from preview, to eye popping slideshow to the launch date to competition check. However, when it comes to any automobile, pricing is also one of the major factor. The car which is launching on June 10, will have a price tag of Rs 7 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). This makes the Jazz the most expensive car to be produced in India, leaving behind Hyundai i20 and Skoda Fabia. Skoda's Fabia is the most-expensive compact car at present, with a price tag of Rs 4.9 lakh on the petrol version and Rs 5.8 lakh on diesel. The company manages to sell only a few hundred units monthly. The Fabia is closely followed in pricing by the Hyundai i20.

Honda Jazz

The Jazz, to be competed against Skoda Fabia, Tata Indigo, Ford Fussion, Maruti D'Zire and the soon to be launched Ritz, would come with a 1.2-liter engine made specifically for the Indian market to deliver high fuel efficiency.

Mahindra Scorpio

The Honda Jazz is said to be more spacious than other premium hatchbacks, and has safety features like ABS, Honda's G-CON technology, and airbags.

The Jazz will be Honda's first product in the big-volume compact car segment, and is expected to witness modest sales, considering the price-sensitive nature of Indian market. Honda, however, seems to have factored this in, considering the statement of its president Masahiro Takedagawa, who said earlier, "Jazz will trail the City sedan in sales volumes."

The Jazz would share the platform and many components with Honda City, making it easier for Honda to source the inputs in bulk at competitive prices and keep localisation at over 70 per cent  to start with. The City sedan costs Rs 7.8-9 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) and sells around 4500-5000 cars in a month.

The price is way too high for any one to buy this car . the honda team need to rework on th e entire project again as i am sure the price is the major disadvantage which takes it all / best price should be around 4.5 to 5.5 lakhs.any thing more than this is a downfall for the jazz to sell in indian market.. | Reply

7 lacs!!!! What the hell? look wise its almost similar to chevrolet UVA and i20. And i don't think other features of the car will justify a price tag of 7 lacs. Go for Hyundai Accent. One of the best sedan and thats also almost 1.5 lacs cheaper. And no doubt sedan is always sedan and small car will remain a small car. Can't beat the looks of sedan. | Reply

I do agree it is a high price but look at it this way. You get the wheelbase, inside space and comfort of the city, but in a smaller size. It should have been priced about 35000 less than the actual price. This is what i feel after a test drive and close observation of all the amazing features. | Reply

Dear Honda Team, pls dont forget what happened to Yamaha in mid 90's. They fell flat on their face. For the reason that they started charging a premium amount and delivery only after 6 months and so on. And they forgot about the dark horse - Hero Honda. So pls dont forget about the Swift move by Maruti. And till date Yamaha is unable to get out of that. | Reply

i have waited for 6 months to have have Honda Jazz , but the pricing just kills...it wont worth more than 5.5 , instead we can go for the sedan, whatever technology you use, end of the day its a small car. Even the Honda city cost 7.8 lakh on road with a big boot space, now u cut the dicky and want a price close to that..Brilliant Pricing Team heading Honda ...LOL....Fooling around | Reply

7 lacs for a 1.2 hatch back. LOL what a joke Honda has played. Why would anyone want to buy this car unless he is in love with the HONDA brand. We got so many choices for super hatchbacks much cheaper and better than Jazz. viz. Swift, Ritz, Grande Punto, i20, Fabia. Volkswagon are coming to India with their POLO. Nissan will bring Micra. There are so many choices. Also if some one does want to spend 7 lacs then he could go for a good Sedan viz. Linea, Dzire, Accent. I dont see any reason for a person to go for Jazz at 7 lacs. So you Honda Japs can take their Jazz back to Japan. We don't need it here. | Reply

i am sure there would be some FOOLS who would go in for the car even at that price, pure ignorance and no practicality. And even the vtec gives not more than 11-12 kmpl mileage so I am not expecting more than 14 max from the jazz , so its not that fuel efficient either what everyone is claiming, better go with a linea diesel for that much price. Prices of diesel are also low and linea would cost onroad as much as the jazz. Better to go with diesel then. | Reply

Jazz has being the most awaited car of 2009,with the international sucess and tremendous fuel efficency it's surely going to rock the indian hatchback market if priced at 5.50 Lacs on road in Delhi. This will make it expensive by 75K in comparison to swift VXI, and at par with Desire and still expensive than i2o and at par with Fabia. | Reply

Car Trade India reported that Honda has decided to resort to rationalise Jazz prices to Rs 4.50 Lacs onwards. This is an extermely prudent and well advised move to rationalise. Honda will boost their sales substantially for sure and do good by their loyal customers who have waited patiently for Jazz. Their earlier projected price of Rs 7 Lacs was a shocker on reading which, I personally know 4 people who were seriously considering opting for the Fiat Grande Punto instead. | Reply

well joshi, they are charging a HEFTY premium for the New Honda city, And btw the cost of the city is around 9 lakhs on road in pune. and zigwheels has not got it wrong, honda will always charge a premium for idiot indian people who buy anything at any price for a honda badge. A fiat linea diesel or a optra magnum diesel would be much better buy than the city. Back to the jazz, it should not have costed more than 5.2 lakhs. | Reply

Until now Honda did not officially announce the price of any of its Jazzvariants. From various web sites, it is known that Honda is rolling our 1.2l and 1.4/1.5l engines as Jazz variants. It is not sure, if TOI has printed the higher end price without disclosing the details. If the basic version costs 7lac, then the higher end models will surely will cost between 8 to 10lacs, which is surely not going to work in Indian market for a hatch back model. If that is what Honda's ambition, surely they will burn their fingers. With Swift, Ritz, i10, i20, Fiat Punto, Skoda Roomster ... and many other competitors from the same segment in the game, Honda will not take such an ignorant decision. Lets wait for the official announcement from Honda before jumping into the conclusion on Jazz.. | Reply

Something has really gone wrong with the planning department/sales department of HONDA. I think they might have suggested this exorbitant price to save their jobs in these times of slowdown everywhere and must have suggested this HUGE price as a means of making their bosses happy. But they do not know that their jobs will not be secure if HONDA closes down by not making good sales because of their price strategy. Some one is trying to make his bosses happier in HONDA. but HONDA JAZZ is cancelled before its launch by me and by my three friends. THANKS. | Reply

honda jazz is undisputedly a great car.this car will be competing with its own model Honda city because a large number of buyers would like to go for a sedan rather than paying such huge price for a hatchback.and of course the price sensitive Indian buyers wont give it a very warm welcome but there also exist a segment that is eagerly waiting for this car. for me its the best as i want a small compact car full of attitude which has all the luxury features and the style that makes it stand out and proves better than a sedan. and ofcourse HONDA tag is there to boost our confidence. i am very exited to own this car!!!!! | Reply

Government should never further reduce excise duties. These car manfacutrers first pass benefit, but slowly without notice raise the price to original non-duty cut selling price. So, effectively, customers pays same price but instead of government, it goes to car manufacturers. There is nothing innovative in these Japanese cars, but they claim premium for brand. If you have a good innovative thing in car, ok then people buy yours, but why should they pay premium. Cause you are trying to say we are having monopoly? | Reply

Honda is close to damaging its reputation as a small car maker by charging customers such exorbitant price for the Jazz.I still can't stop laughing at the price. Someone in the Honda Management has really gone insane by suggesting the 700,000 INR price. I don't know what the expectation is. To mint money from India where buyers are ready to pay anything for the Honda badging. See this thread Mr. Masahiro Takedagawa and look how much discontent you have spread.Wake up Mr. President. You seem to be in Wonderland....and many thanks for disappointing thousands of prospective customers. The Car is already a Flop even before its out. Another great feat for Honda. Yet another feather in their cap. I salute those who will still buy the car and patronize Honda for this disaster. | Reply

Takedagawa san in an earlier interview mentioned that worldwide, the Jazz is priced more than the City (In markets where sold). India would be an exception. While I expected a high sticker price, 7 Lakhs!! That's way out of whack. You can say anything about quality etc etc. But there is just no justification. Japanese car makers unlike the American's have always been known to produce a car at a lower cost. This seems like a total reverse. | Reply

Here in US they sell higher capacity engine over Fit and its hit. But not sure how will indian market accept it with 1.2 ltr and whooping price. There is too many choices for sedans itself in that price range. Accent, Fiat Linea, upcoming punto, city, sx4 and many more. Even a Scorpio hawk comes in this range!!! Lol | Reply

I just read in the TOI that the Jazz will be priced at 700,000 INR. Am just plain disappointed reading that.Honda CEO says he still expects the CITY to sell more numbers than the JAZZ and it not looking at a Volume Market.Mr. CEO - I feel with this price its going to be really tough for you to sell even a few hundred Jazz cars a month. Let us not even call Jazz a hatchback. A hatchback at 700,000 sounds ridiculous to me.You put in a thousand features of a sedan into the Jazz but with that price in the Indian Market you may never succeed. You will surely go the Fabia way. Try selling at 500,000 INR and see the difference for yourself. Thanks!DEAR ZIGWHEELS,Would like you to communicate all these messages to the Honda Management. It is indeed shocking that Honda wants 8-9 lakh from the Customer as OTR price. Why will not people buy the CITY then?Really a ridiculous decision from Honda!Honda's Rajasthan plant will soon have to be shut down as they wont be required to produce enough Jazz cars coz no one is going to buy them :-/ | Reply

Price tag of 7 lacs for jazz is frustrating for all those who were awaiting for launch of jazz and expecting price tag of 5.5L. Honda has largely disappointed the mass and hence to my has missed the opportunity to cut a bigger pie in hatchback market. I gues Honda is too optimistic and over confident in princing the jazz at 7L, it shows that they are yet to know psych of an indian customer whose first preference will be for a sedan and who will buy a hatchback coz it fits to his budget, there will be very few who would want to spend cost of a sedan for a hatchback and they definately dont represent the mass. Honda will fall flat of its face, they must learn from fabia and fiat 500's mistakes. | Reply

I am not sure and what basis Honda tagged a price of 7L as peoples are looking for cheap and small cars. It may be for only loyal customer who choose only Honda (like fabia). We have to see how many cars they are going to sell for month by competing other small cars. | Reply

If Honda thinks they can just get away with good reputation they enjoy and take Indian Car Enthusiasts and lay peoplf for a Ride, Sorry this is going to be a big down fall, I totally agree with all the others on this matter This has to be priced below 5.5L on road. RIP Honda. | Reply

honda has made its reputation in Indian market with its innovative products, but hatchback costing 7 lacs is something unacceptable. So watch and see.......the progress..... | Reply

@Shravan:This segment doesn't care about the LOGO. people looks for VFM in this segment"ofcourse, its HONDA" thats why they are ripping of you.. with the so called premium for that H | Reply

India is a price sensitive market. People always ask for value for money. For the same price, any one buy a much bigger car. Why a honda Jazz. With this price, there will not be any jazz... | Reply

I think Honda is not looking for sales but increasing number of models in india. Its a weak effort to compete i20 or fabia. | Reply

Wait for Fiat Grande Punto. It could be a better deal. | Reply

Price is too high. Instead I can plan for swift or i20. Looks like Honda is overconfident about their sales | Reply

the price of 7 lacs is way more expensive in a hatch back, i think i should go ahead to buy swift dzire (diesel) vdi with lesser price | Reply

I am not very expert in this segment but considering the cost of Jazz 7 lacs I think i should go ahead to buy Swift dzire (diesel) with lesser price | Reply

Any one saving up for the Jazz should go ahead and buy either an i20 or a Swift. The car in nowhere close to being worth 7 lakh and I've driven it to assure you that | Reply

7 Lac has got to be high end model ! If the base model is more than 6.5 on road mumbai, its not going to sell.I'd rather go for a Fiat Grande Punto or Fabia high end instead. | Reply

Paying 7 lack for hatch back is not a wise decision as we get real good sedan loaded with good features at the same or with some more bugs .. and maintaining a honda vehicle is always costly... | Reply
  • Madhav (04 May 2009 16:04)
Honda Jazz must come under 5 Lacs given the volume expected. 7 Lacs is tooooooo high for any hatch back. Wake up Honda !! | Reply

I have driven the car in Dubai. Its smooth, very fuel efficient but not worth 7 Lakhs at all..!!!! One has to be totally crazy to buy a hatchback at this ridiculous price. | Reply

Whats the point in getting a Hatch back which will cost almost or even more than some sedans. It seems 10 years have not made Honda learn anything or they are still under the feeling that they can pass off anything with a 'H' batch to India.Players in this segment are huge when it comes to volumes | Reply
  • MUKESH PAHUJA (04 May 2009 14:45)
this is surely not a wise desiciion of honda, in this price range one can easily buy all the entry level sedans like ford fiest, fiat linea, chevrolet aveo, this time honda is going to regret his decision, as the company is taking the benefit of excise duty also and still charging it so high, this is not good HONDA | Reply
