Two wheeler sales cruise steadily in November

In terms of pure volumes, market leader Hero MotoCorp continues to lead the surge. Bajaj, however, reported a month on month decline in sales

The two-wheeler industry, which has been the mainstay of the Indian automotive sector over the past couple of years, continues to post steady growth rates in November.

Market leader Hero MotoCorp, which is aggressively expanding its global footprint, sold a total of 5,47,413 two wheelers in November, reporting a 3 per cent increase in its sales.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India also posted over sales of over 3 lakh units, registering 17 per cent growth month on month. Motorcycle sales at Honda showed a marginal decline over November last year, but scooter sales continued to surge ahead. In the domestic market alone, Honda sold 2,17,049 scooters in November this year, as against 1,63,679 scooters in November last year.

Bajaj Auto sold a total of 2,61,948 motorcycles last month, but recorded a decline of 6 per cent when it had sold 2,78,703 bikes in November 2013.

TVS Jupiter

In the numbers game, TVS Motor Company takes fourth place, selling 2,20,046 units in November this year, up 36 per cent from 1,61,908 units in November last year. 

TVS scooter sales continue to retain momentum, posting 62 per cent growth from 38,331 units in November last year to 62,233 units in November 2014. TVS motorcycles also continued to attract buyers, growing 41 per cent from 61,471 units in November last year to 86,424 units in November 2014.

Yamaha Motor India also continued with its upward sales growth, registering 12 per cent growth in domestic sales. The company sold 44,678 units in November 2014 as against 39,777 units sold in November last year.

Royal Enfield Classic 500 Desert Storm

In terms of pure percentage growth however, it is Royal Enfield, which posted a whopping 52 per cent growth month on month. Volumes for the iconic brand stood at 27,542 units for combined domestic and exports sales. Demand for Royal Enfield motorcycles is still strong with a substantial waiting period for its popular models.

Sales of Mahindra Two Wheelers last month is in the red, down 45 per cent from corresponding sales figures in November last year. The company sold 13,052 units in November against 32,799 units in November 2013. The company is however, bullish on its latest scooter Gusto.

“We are delighted by the enthusiastic response to our new global scooter, the Gusto across north India and expect it to increase as we ramp up production and roll it out across other parts of India and abroad,” said Viren Popli, the company’s chief of operations.

Growth at Suzuki Motorcycle India remained flat month on month with the company selling 33,400 units in November, compared to 32,799 units in November last year.

“Our concerted efforts to promote the Gixxer and Let’s have met with positive customer sentiment. Customer satisfaction and word of mouth publicity are key factors that work in our favour. Growth in sales indicates that the market responds favourably to our products and we hope this is part of a continuing trend,” said Atul Gupta, Executive Vice President, SMIPL.

Suzuki Let’s and the 155cc Gixxer are the last two products introduced by the company and Suzuki India is banking on their success in the Indian two-wheeler space, while consolidating its dealer and service network across the country.
