Toyota’s fresh salvo at the MPV and premium SUV segment in form of the new Innova and Fortuner that are coming end of this year or early next will get new smaller and stronger hearts to beat. Toyota recently unveiled a new GD family of diesel engines at the Vienna Motor Symposium that will power the Innova, Hilux pickup and the Fortuner.

While the Hilux isn’t sold in India, Toyota’s two biggest bread winners, the Fortuner and Innova are and will get these new engines. Toyota follows the World’s downsizing trend as smaller, more efficient engines are the need of the hour, but manages to dish out more power from the smaller capacity engines. In case of the Innova, it will be a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder mill to replace the 2.5-litre engine and for the Fortuner, a 2.8-litre unit will succeed the current 3.0-litre.

While capacity has gone down, output is impressive at least for the Innova. The new 2.4 dishes out 160PS of power and 400Nm of torque, that’s considerably more than the 102PS/200Nm of the current 2.5. The Innova is positioned as a premium MPV and Toyota wants to stay clear of the current competition. This engine promises to retain Toyota’s leadership position in the segment.

Details of the larger engine aren’t out yet but within a week from now, Toyota will be unveiling the next gen Hilux and with it, furnish details of the engine that will power the Fortuner.
