Just as all electronic appliances feature a star rating for power consumption, new cars effective from July 1st will have information related to pollution emitted by the car and also the noise level of the horn. The order has been issued by the National Green Tribunal and the guideline is to be followed by all vehicle manufacturers. As per the directive suggested by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways all car manufacturers need to provide information on emission figures for vehicles which runs on petrol, diesel, or CNG and the sound level of the horn.
The addition of such details will educate the buyer to compare the pollution levels prior to the purchase of the vehicle. For vehicles that run on petrol, CNG, and LPG the pollutants recognised are carbon monoxide, hydro carbon, non-methane hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbons (if applicable). The values of the pollutants will be displayed in the form of grams/km. Fine particulate matter quantity will be measured in the case of diesel powered vehicles.
The notice was issued by the ministry on December 21 which was further circulated to all the state principle secretaries, director of Automotive Research Association of India, Central Institute of Road Transport, and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. It can be said that even though perspective buyers will be encouraged to buy less polluting vehicle the effect of the same on the final decision of buyers is still considerably doubtful.
In the current scenario, the transport authorities are provided with Form No.22 by car manufacturers which provides information related to the emission levels of the vehicle.
