In a surprising change of stand, West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress party expressed that it is now open to resolve the issue around Tata Motors’ abandoned Singur factory. Back in 2008, the carmaker had decided to move the Tata Nano production from its Singur factory to Sanand in Gujarat, after facing violent protests over land acquisition in West Bengal.
The agitation was led by Mamata Banerjee, the then leader of the opposition and now the Chief Minister of the state. Gaining power in 2011, Banerjee had taken control of the disputed 997-acre plot and announced that she would return the land back to the displaced farmers. In retaliation, Tata Motors had approached the court, and after a long and bitter legal battle the last leg of hearing is set to start in the apex court next month.
Recently, Partha Chatterjee, one of the senior members of the Trinamool Congress and the Education Minister of West Bengal, was quoted by leading national business daily saying that "Tata Motors Ltd was welcome to return to its abandoned Singur factory", clearly hinting at the state government’s eagerness to resolve the issue with the auto major outside court. The political party is trying hard to bring back investment and revive economic growth in the state, and this change in stance could be in line with this.
Earlier this week, five Tata Group managing directors met Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee at her office in Kolkata to discuss about their respective companies. These included top brass from Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Company, TM International Logistics Limited, Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Limited, MJunction, and Tata Metaliks. However, Tata Motors representatives were not present for this meeting and as of now the car major is maintaining its silence on the Singur issue.
