Despite a decline in its overall exports Hyundai’s domestic car sales towards the end of the last fiscal year seem to have grown considerably with the company having sold as many as 39,122 units in the month of March alone.

Export markets are doing well but it is the domestic market that had greater buoyancy and so the company’s export lines were diverted for the domestic market. Of the 59,229 units that were sold all together, exports figures fell to 20,107 units in March from 23,730 units in the corresponding month last year.

Commenting on the March domestic sales, Mr Arvind Saxena, Director - Marketing and Sales, HMIL said, “We could meet our expectations in March as there was considerable interest to beat the expected price hike in the Union Budget. The market continues to pose many challenges; things can improve if interest rates come down this quarter.”

The A2 segment continues to dominate overall sales with 51,336 units to its name. With the launch of the new Hyundai i20 we expect that figure to only get better in the coming months. The premium compact sedan still rests on the shoulders of the age old Accent and the increasingly popular fluidic Verna, while the upper segment Sonata and Santa Fe SUV have once again made humble contributions.

The segment-wise cumulative sales for March 2012 are:

A2 segment 51,336 units (Eon, Santro, i10, i20)
A3 Segment 7,679 units (Accent and Verna)
SUV Segment 122 units (Santa Fe)
