An increase in the level of pollution in Delhi has appalled the government. In a bid to keep the pollution levels in check, the government is working up on launching a new pollution check system in the Capital. Under this new arrangement, car owners will not be issued annual fitness certificates without the said pollution check.
The government will set up 350 emission checking centres in the Capital which will be linked to the transport department’s vehicle database. The pollution checking system will be automatically calibrated to software which will update relevant information for a vehicle’s registration number. This data will be used to review whether that particular vehicle should be issued a fitness certificate or not.
As the pollution checking systems will be calibrated to software the chances of human interference in issuing pollution under control (PUC) certificates will be limited. This system already exists in Bengaluru and will later be replicated across the country.
Vehicle owners will be unable to secure the annual fitness certificates if their vehicle fails to meet the emission standards or if they fail to get their vehicle tested. This system will first be introduced for commercial vehicles and in subsequent years include personal vehicles that are older than two years.
