Troller Veiculos Especiais, a subsidiary of Ford Brazil has unveiled the next generation of its successful Troller SUV called the T4. The new Troller T4 comes with 4x4 as standard and is the second generation of the specialised off road vehicle that is made by Ford as a Brazil-only model. Troller was founded in 1995 with the first generation of the T4 unveiled in 1999.

The T4 has so far sold over 4 million units and is a very popular vehicle in Brazil. Originally, the Troller T4 came with a 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine. The new Troller T4 comes with a 3.2-litre, turbocharged diesel, 5-cylinder engine from the likes of the Ford Transit van. The Troller T4 gets a 6-speed manual gearbox and 4-wheel-drive as standard. Although no official specs on the engine have been released, this 5-cylinder 3.2-litre diesel engine is said to be quite potent, especially in off road conditions with its high reserves of torque.

In terms of design, the Troller T4 borrows heavily from other off-road cars like the Jeep Wrangler and the Land Rover Defender. The front is reminiscent of the Defender with its narrow stance and round headlamps with a horizontally slated grille. The rest of the car reminds us of the Jeep Wrangler that we drove last year with its squarish fenders and plastic fenders. The rear too is reminiscent of the Wrangler with its upright stance and small taillights

A car like the Ford Troller T4 would make a lot of sense in the blooming off road segment in India. With competition like the Mahindra Thar and the aging Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, the Ford Troller would get a host of young buyers who would prefer a butch and muscular compact SUV with classical off-roader looks as compared to the curvaceous and modern looking Ford Ecosport. Although there are no plans to sell the Troller anywhere outside Brazil, Ford should consider booming countries like India, Russia and China as a possible markets for the T4.
