Mazda has pulled the wraps off the all-new 2016 Mazda 2 ahead of its public debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show scheduled to take place in October. This sub-compact car is based on the Mazda Hazumi concept car that was unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, and has received its first complete redesign in seven years.

The 2016 Mazda 2 adopts the Japanese carmaker’s KODO design language and flaunts a wide polygonal grille and swept-back headlamps that rise over the car’s front fenders. The refreshed car gets a bulging hood and sports curvaceous creases that run along the lower edges of the door. With a subtle roof spoiler, pinched taillights, and a curved crease just below the rear windshield, the rear of the 2016 Mazda 2 resembles the old car.

Inside, the 2016 Mazda 2 gets a horizontal dashboard design marked by a vertical touchscreen infotainment display, and a trio of climate-control knobs on the centre stack. A rotary controller for the infotainment system is located below the gear level, while the instrument cluster consists of a large analog tachometer flanked by a pair of digital displays.

Mazda has released very few details about the mechanical components of its 2016 Mazda 2. The company, however, stated that in Japan the car will use a new 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel engine, called Skyactiv-D 1.5, as well as a 1.3- and a 1.5-litre gas engine, called Skyactiv-G 1.3 and Skyactiv-G 1.5, respectively. Full specifications are expected to be announced closer to the car's market launch.

This car is known by the name of Demio in Japan and its production will commence at Mazda’s Hofu plant this year.
