Another iconic nameplate goes electric! The Mercedes EQG, the electric avatar of the formidable G-Class SUV, will be Mercedes’s showstopper at the Auto China Show 2024. It’ll mark its global debut on April 24 and given that the all-electric G Wagon has already been confirmed for India, we can’t help but not lose our cool!

And it isn’t just the EQG that will make a debut, as it will be accompanied by the facelifted AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE. While the EQG will be available to the public a day after its debut, i.e 25 April, the performance sedan will be revealed in Shanghai during the Formula 1 weekend starting on April 20.

We haven’t yet seen the production ready EQG, but going by the concept showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo and the myriad spy shots and teaser videos, the electric G won’t derail from its OG identity as defined by the upright, squarish, in-your-face demeanor. Majority of the styling will be shared with the gas-guzzling G-Class, but of course, with a few EV-specific inserts.

The latter could come in the form of tweaked grille with swanky lighting and restyled alloys for improving efficiency (drag). The cabin, too, is likely to be identical to the standard G-Class we’re familiar with. But it's the powertrain department where we are yet to get any sort of familiarity with.

In-depth technical specifications of the Mercedes-Benz EQG concept are yet to be revealed, but we do know it’ll be getting four motors driving each wheel. There’s gonna be a two-speed gearbox to help tackle tough off-road obstacles and we have already seen the EQG test mules doing donuts on the same spot. If you somehow haven’t, get ready for what may seem like a very bizarre feature.

The Mercedes EQG should go on sale soon after its global debut in China. Considering that we received a launch confirmation at the Bharat Mobility Show, an India launch could take place in early 2025. When launched, it will rival the upcoming Jeep Wrangler EV, which is also under development.
