Gurgaon cops fined 13,500 traffic violators in the city

Gurgaon police has set a different record of its kind. The cops have issued 13,500 fines to people who have violated traffic rules in the city, including the Mayor. Yes, you heard it right! These fines, or challans were served as part of an intensive traffic drive which the police undertook to mark the ‘Zero Tolerance Day’ in the city.

This drive started at 8AM in the morning and was carried out by 300 cops, which is 85 per cent of the total strength of the traffic police wing. The Gurgaon police had set a target of 12,000 challans, but exceeded the said goal by fining 13,500 in the city.

The city’s otherwise reckless traffic saw discipline due to this drive. The cops had set up 100 checking points at places such as Sohna Road. The mayor of the city, too, received a challan for not wearing a seat belt.

The cops did not reveal why they had set a target of 12,000 challans, but it is no secret that Gurgaon is infamous for its rash driving. In January and February this year, the city's roads witnessed 56 accidents that caused at least one death.

There are 72 traffic offences which call for a challan under the Motors Vehicle Act, 1988, but cops were instructed to focus primarily on jumping signals, driving without seatbelt, breaking speed limit, using the phone while driving, smoking, wrong parking and wrong lane driving.

This drive by the Gurgaon police was such a success that the cops ran out of challan books mid-way but were issued fresh stocks soon enough to continue with the drive.
