Audi A6 sets Guinness Record by travelling 14 countries without refuelling

Audi has officially bagged the Guinness Book of World Record by driving to 14 countries on a single tank of fuel. An unmodified Audi A6 TDI ultra chosen for this challenge averaged 27.02kmpl and completed a total of 1,865km without the need for a fuel-stop.

The drive commenced in Netherlands with motoring journalist Andrew Frankel and race driver Rebecca Jackson behind the wheel. The A6 Ultra was driven from Maastricht, through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany and Italy towards the Balkans, with the tank finally running empty at Nova Sad in Hungary. The record-setting drive was originally supposed to be 1,600km long, but achieved 1,865km.

The record-attempting journey was strategically planned in a way that avoids congested cities as well as highways and mountain roads. However, despite this planning the drive wasn’t all smooth as the drivers had to face traffic, closed roads and tunnels and even an unplanned detour.

Commenting on the new record, Jon Zammett, Head, Public Relations, Audi, UK, said, “By covering so much of Europe on a single fill-up, we have proven that real-world economy of almost 76mpg or more can be had from the latest engine technology.The Audi A6 TDI ultra has proven the range capability of one of the world's most advanced executive cars.”

The Audi A6 Ultra is powered by a 2.0-litre TDi engine capable of churning out 190PS of power and 400Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or an optional seven-speed S tronic automatic transmission which enables the frugal executive model to emit just 109g/km of CO2.
