2012 Bajaj Pulsar 200NS: World Exclusive First Ride

by Adil Jal Darukhanawala Photography : Kunal Khadse Posted on 27 Jan 2012146,809 Views18 Comments

ZigWheels Editor-in-Chief, Adil Jal Darukhanawala got a chance to ride the spanking new Bajaj Pulsar 200NS and here is the exclusive first ride impression of the most important motorcycle of 2012. Time to shift into higher gear as the new Pulsar brings with it a host of never-seen-before technologies and engineering mastery at its very finest

Any Pulsar, be it the 135 or the 150 right up till the 220 was performance oriented and in the present scenario, the new bike hits the front and goes straight to the top of the heap in the quickest possible manner. I would also like to state one thing here and that is to ask whether any other bike maker in this country has come up front and stated the performance capability of any of its machines in so up front a manner as has Bajaj Auto. In fact the specifications released to the media at the launch today indicate a top whack of 136kmph which is surely top drawer stuff but then the acceleration figures are even more illuminating: zero to sixty comes up in 3.61 seconds while the ton from standstill is dispatched in 9.83 seconds!

Quick gets a whole new meaning. However, these figures are all academic because the real pleasure comes from the actual driveability in town and the way the bike reacts when the wick is lit! Meaning when you crack the throttle open, the engine spins so fast and quick that you need to aim for the gaps while keeping the throttle pinned open if you want to dazzle yourself with the capability the Pulsar 200 NS packs. This is a bike (Read: Special Coverage) which thrives on revs but which is equally docile and tractable if that is how you want to enjoy your biking.

I got astride the bike for a short sharp session and was immediately floored by the strong seamless surge the 199.5cc motor put out. If that wasn’t all, sticking tall yet comfortably in the superbly crafted saddle and yet straddling the tank with its well defined recesses – better than on the older Pulsars mind you, the sheer strength of the new bike’s frame was apparent.

There was hardly a weave or tuck and under heavy braking or when leaning into corners and exiting them quickly was a revelation. After a couple of runs I came in but Joseph Abraham who was watching me go out on his baby asked me to be a bit more adventurous and told me to scream the motor in all the gears to its 10,000rpm red line and then come back and tell him how the bike behaved. This was something else altogether for the manner in which the bike screamed in sheer delight as she was given its head and I started shifting as high as the track allowed me to.

Why does it have 3 spark plugs? Later will Bajaj add more spark plugs just like gillette adds blades to its razors?

guys can u please help me out to clear some of my doubts...how is fuel injection compared wit carbureted 3 spark plug tech? can u please clarify it's differnce n working for me? [kind request] how is 3 spark plug help in 200ns in what way? company says 200ns avg is 58kmpl & also sum of the sites say so, would it b so? n giving d silencer at d bottom of d engine, will it be ok during rainy season and specially on indian roads?and being a muscle bike i doubt of the silencer would get damaged...i also read on few reviews n comments that the pulsar do have some gear shifting problem and engine problem and also bajaj parts gets rusty fast ...

Hi all,I might be highly excited to take an opportunity to ride this bike but i am looking for 3 (Power, Performance, fuel efficiency) in one and also in 90000.. I have rewed 3 more bikes like Honda Unicon, Honda Dazzler and Pulsar 220 and APCHE 180 RTR.... all are more or less same ... so hoping this bike will give me some addition option to marked it

Pulsar 200NS is the best Indian bike made by an Indian company, which until now was the RTR180. But the 200NS is definitely based on the KTM200 duke engine, so can we say 200NS is a Indian bike? The original KTM 200 engine is fuel-injected, but 200NS is carbureted and with 3 spark plugs. Bajaj have done this just to say the engine is not based on KTM200, but all know it is based on KTM engine. However, this 3-spark plug design will cause problem with misfiring. I guess 2 spark plugs are like dummies that dont really fire in normal revs.

Which bike will be in trouble now? I think it will kill cbr250 and if competitively priced even ninja 250 good to see a indian company beating the Japs

CBR250 is leagues ahead of any pulsar to date, has FI, ABS and mono shocks plus a most refined engine made ever by Honda. It may be good bike but not in the segment of Honda.

That so-called refined Honda engine is a myth in India. Do you mean Yamaha, Suzuki, TVS, dont make refined engines? Dont judge engine smoothness by sound, judge it by vibrations. Sound of bike varies depending on exhaust setup. If bullet, ninja, harley, etc. were silent like unicorn, then what is the fun? For silent bike, buy and electric scooter. Real bikers love sound. Anyway, given the price range, the CBR250 and 200NS should never be compared. Coming back to Pulsar 200NS, it is by far the best Indian bike made by an Indian company, which until now was the RTR180. Superbly written as always Adil Jal Darukhanawala! When this man left Overdrive, their English and the way of narrating things fell miserably in Overdrive. Back to the Pulsar, for sure this bike's going to be the game changer, and until now I never considered a Bajaj as my next bike but this new Pulsar changed everything - new frame, water-cooled engine, monoshock and what not. Seems like Bajaj has got a winner in their hands, well done!

Where is the silencer? And if there is a silencer then what can we do for modifying?

Engine is niche. Like a sports bike.

for those who are still thinking about Bajaj Pulsar 200NS vs KTM Duke 200: Bajaj Pulsar 200NS is the best middle-class sports bike and there is no doubt in it. i love it. but, KTM Duke 200 is not just a bike, it a Lifestyle. like Bullet. their model name is not just a name. they mean it. (KTM) Duke - A nobleman (in various countries) of high rank Rolal (Enfield) - Established, chartered or authorized by royalty are you still comparing?!. visit some foreign blogs/website before comparing a foreign/other category bike. PS: students, stay away from Royal Enfield & KTM, unless you have a fatso wallet for addon accessories/wears. without those extra addons, there is no meaning of buying a KTM or Royal Enfield.
