Launched in 2008, the Yamaha Safe Riding Science (YSRS) initiative aims to inculcate safe riding techniques among Indian riders.

Another initiative under the YSRS banner is the Kidz Yamaha Safe Riding Science programme, in which 100 students in the 8-13 years age group from Ryan International School, Gurgaon, participated. The programme involved a theory class and a practical session.

The theory session focused on the basics of road safety, such as turning on the road and crossing junctions, that were elaborated on by a Yamaha licensed trainer, The practice session dwelt on the benefits of using riding gear and following the correct riding techniques. The children also got their first opportunity to ride the Yamaha TTR 50 and PW50 kids’ bikes, and were instructed in the dos and don’ts of acceleration and braking.

Jun Nakata, Director - Sales and Marketing, India Yamaha Motor, said, “Understanding the need for an accident free environment, we feel that safe riding habits should be inculcated from the start and that is why our Yamaha Safe Riding Science (YSRS) initiative is directed towards today’s kids and youth. We want to teach them the nuances of riding safely so that when they grow up and start riding bikes they are well aware of traffic safety and proper riding techniques. We are glad that our YSRS initiative has been acknowledged and well accepted across India.”

The YSRS initiative has been held in the course of five years at Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Nagpur, Dehradun, Guwahati, Vizag, Jammu, Ahmedabad, Jamshedpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Udaipur, Varanasi and Goa.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world, with 13 deaths every hour, about 250 a day and 1,14,590 each year. Yamaha’s YSRS campaign is a step in the right direction to address this alarming situation.

Yamaha plans to take the Safe Riding Science programme to the interior regions of India to the grassroots level.
