If approved, the new 300cc race series will see the likes of Yamaha's YZF-R3, Kawasaki Ninja 300 and KTM RC 390 competing in this class

The consideration for a new Supersport 300 class was taken at the last meeting of the Superbike Commission, the body which makes the rules for the World Superbike series, representatives of Dorna, the FIM and the factories.

British site Visordown lists the likely bikes  which will participate in the new Supersport 300 class as the Yamaha YZF-R3, Kawasaki Ninja 300 and KTM RC 390. The site says Honda’s CBR 300R seems less competitive, using a 286cc single-cylinder engine where the R3 and Ninja are twins.  The RC 390 is  a single but has an 87cc capacity advantage over the Honda.

Initiatives are already underway in countries such as the USA, UK, Germany and the Netherlands to feature a KTM RC 390 cup series, which will allow young riders to compete at a low cost. More importantly, initiatives in key markets such as India, Thailand and Malaysia could also see such bikes being raced.
