It’s the best month for discounts we’ve seen in the past year when it comes to discounting. There are two reasons for it – one is a new model replacing the old one and the other is just plain added competition with the festive season approaching. So the not-so-popular cars are going at good discounts to lure car buyers. The a look at the top 10 deals on offer this month –

1. Volkswagen Polo

Now don’t mistake it for the new 2014 Polo. This one’s the Polo from the old batch that’s yet to be sold. Naturally, demand for this Polo is ridiculously low and so dealers are offering Rs 75,000 off on the top-spec petrol Polo and Rs 53,000 off on the diesels. The petrol is a better choice since the new Polo sports the same engine while the updated Polo’s diesel mill is a new 1.5-litre block. The stocks are running out so step on the gas and sign your cheque.

2. Fiat Punto

Just like the Polo, the Punto too had more supply than demand. And so when the Punto Evo was launched, the older car’s stock was yet to get cleared. Even now a handful are available at Fiat showrooms with sizeable discounts to the tune of Rs 70,000 on offer. The European hatchback is a good handler and might not be on par with its rivals as an overall package but at the price it is going at, there will be few chances to grab another Punto.

3. Maruti Ritz

Is it time for Maruti to pull the plug on the Ritz or just let it continue to sell in auto-pilot mode, we don’t know yet but one thing’s for sure, dealers are finding it very difficult to get this car off the showrooms. The Ritz is running heavy discounts in excess of 10 percent of the price of the car. For that you get tried and tested engines and gearboxes and the convenience of owning a Maruti. A good deal for a logical car buyer, but don’t expect that feel good feeling of buying a new car because the Ritz is outdated now.

4. Tata Indica Vista

The Vista staring at the end of a double barrel gun – the Zest shot has already been fired and the Bolt will be shot soon to cripple Vista sales further. For a line that isn’t selling well, we believe it’s logical for Tata to discontinue this model but the think tank at Tata Motors feel there’s a last gasp still left in the Vista. It was recently updated and overall is a much better car than when it was launched and with the heavy discounts on offer, it is super value for money. If you want a large hatchback for throwaway prices, the Vista is a good bet right about now.

5. Maruti Wagon R

Talk about cannibalization! The large company that Maruti Suzuki is, it ends up launching models stepping on each other’s toes. Case in point is the Celerio. Since the Celerio was launched the Wagon R has had it tough. The boxy hatchback is no nonsense, has good interior space due to its tall proportions and has a peppy engine with a slick gearbox. It offers good resale value too but with the Celerio parked right besides it in a showroom at a similar price, the Wagon R is catching dust. And you can capitalize on this because dealers are offering Rs 60,000 off on the car.

6. Maruti Wagon R Stingray

The Wagon R’s relatively handsome twin, spare the name, is also facing the heat. It shares the mechanicals, most of the design and almost all the parts and so stares the same fate as well. The Stingray gets the same discounts as well and puts Maruti in a dilemma – one car hurting two in its line up. Just prior to the Celerio launch, the A-Star and Zen Estillo were also discontinued. In our opinion, the Stingray makes a better buy than the Wagon R because the projector lamps and smart styling up front add to its appeal.

7. Chevrolet Beat

One too many Chevrolets get into our deals list this month showing signs of a struggling carmaker. The Beat is the first on it with over 10 percent knocked off the sticker price. It’s a tough market for Chevrolet and despite having the small diesel unit and with that offering good access to diesels at the lower end of this spectrum, the Beat isn’t selling well. Rs 53,000 off the sticker price does make it a lot more tempting though.

8. Tata Indica eV2

A car that refuses to die… The Indica eV2 is in for the long haul and by now, Tata has recovered all its investment on the car and much more. So the hatchback is outdated but rugged and that’s got to find a few takers. Rs 44,000 off of an already affordable car is sure to at least tempt the budget conscious buyer and the taxi market.

9. Chevrolet Sail U-Va

The next Chevrolet in this month’s list is the Sail U-Va. A Chinese strategy gone wrong for Chevrolet but the Sail U-Va has its plusses – Spacious cabin, proven engines and value for money pricing. It may not be the hatchback to go for but one to consider for sure with the discounts Chevrolet is offering. Deals worth Rs 42,000 makes this a car worth exploring.

10. Chevrolet Spark

Forgotten about the Spark? Most of you have because we rarely see any on roads these days. The Spark though used to be a popular car once upon a time when it sold as a Daewoo Matiz. Just for history sake, visit a Chevrolet Showroom and take a look at the Spark since dealers are offering Rs 40,000 worth of deals on it. There are plenty of other new cars on sale in India these days though.
