Following the success of the Zest, Tata Motors is set to bring in the Bolt. Here are 7 things you need to know about the car

1.) Is it different from the Zest?

Of course it is. And it won't quite take a keen eye to figure out the difference in dimensions. While there isn't much in the width and the height, the shorter length of the Bolt is evident. Thankfully though this hasn't quite had a negative effect on the space inside mainly for the fact that the wheelbase remains unchanged. There is ample of room for the rear passengers as well. That said, at 210 litres the boot space of the Bolt is much smaller than that of the Zest.

2.) What about the interiors?

The dashboard layout is pretty much the same as the Zest but instead of the dual tone treatment the Bolt gets an all black dash. The gloss black center console gets silver accents on both sides. Overall build quality is good. In terms of features the Bolt has the works including a 2 din audio system with Bluetooth, AUX and USB connectivity. For the Bolt, Tata has associated with MapMyIndia for navigation which can be connected using the USB on your android phone.

3.) ...and the engine?

Like the Zest, the Bolt too will be offered with petrol and diesel engine options. In petrol, the Bolt will be powered by a turbocharged engine. The 1.2-litre mill delivers 90PS of power and 140Nm of torque. In the diesel trim, the Bolt is powered by a 1.3-litre engine that pumps 75PS of power and 190Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

4.) The mechanicals?

Tata Motors had a very short turn around time for making the Zest which was why the Company chose to retain the Vista platform and improve on it. Although for the Bolt, Tata continues to have the same chassis, the suspension geometry has been changed to provide a much more energetic drive feel. The setup on the Bolt is stiffer than that on the Zest and it shows. The car takes on corners a lot more confidently than its elder sibling.

5.) Does it get an AMT?

Not as of now. While the Zest does get an AMT, logic says that the Bolt should get it too. But the AMT was not part of the plan right from the first unveiling of the Bolt at the Auto Expo. With a shortage of AMT units as of now, Tata will not miss it much, but going by the popularity of the gearbox, it’s a matter of time before Tata Motors decides to equip the Bolt with it as well.

6.) When will it be launched?

Tata Motors says they will launch the Bolt in early 2015 and as we mentioned earlier, it will be offered in both petrol as well as diesel engine options.

7.) How much will it cost?

Judging by the way Tata has got the pricing of the Zest just right, we expect them to bring the Bolt at a pretty competitive price point as well. The Tata Bolt is expected to come at a starting price of Rs 4 lakh.
