All eyes are on Detroit next month if you are a premium SUV buyer as Audi will showcase the next generation Q7 at American automotive ground zero. The new Q7 isn’t just a new model with an all new design and new powertrains though. It will be the first model in the Volkswagen group to come with a diesel plug-in hybrid setup. Automotive news claims in a report of the next-gen Q7 making a green turn.
Next year, Audi will launch the petrol and diesel powered Q7 while the diesel PHV will arrive after that. Audi boss Ulrich Hackenberg has previously mentioned about diesel plug-ins arriving next year but there was no confirmation of which models will receive it first until now. No further details are available at the moment besides rumours of the Q7 sporting electric turbochargers.
Audi’s diesel engine development head, Ulrich Weiss had confirmed to an Australian website called Drive in June - “I can confirm we are working on the development of the e-boost definitely.” When quizzed if the next-gen Q7 will bear the first electric turbocharger, Weiss did not confirm or deny it. Audi had tested the response to the electric turbocharger in the RS5 concept car at the Paris Motor Show earlier this year. Weiss said to Drive on the response, “maybe we have such a market for this in the future.”
