July was a strong month at the sales charts for Maruti Suzuki. Domestic sales were up 22.5 percent at 1.1 lakh units from a shade over 90,000 in the same period last year. After a dip in sales in the super compact hatchback segment that constitutes the Alto and Wagon R almost all through 2014, sales have picked up again and that has boosted segment sales by 31.3 percent. A total of 37,752 Altos and Wagon Rs were sold last month.

The largest selling segment for Maruti however is the Celerio, Swift, Dzire and Ritz group that amounted for 48,381 units in July 2015. Even the Dzire Tour sales picked up considerably last month  posting 3,370 units in July whereas the Ciaz didn’t fare as well contributing with just 2099 units. Ertiga sales meanwhile almost crossed the 7,000 mark. Exports in the month of July stayed steady at 11,307 units.

Maruti Suzuki is betting big on growing into a premium carmaker now as a couple of big launches are lined up. The S-Cross comes on August 5 and Maruti’s premium hatchback code named YRA comes around October to challenge the Elite i20 and Honda Jazz. Maruti Suzuki has also opened a new network of showrooms branded Nexa to house its premium products only.
