Following a disappointing finish in Australia, Gaurav Gill bounced back hard to take the top step of the podium in the 2014 APRC Rally Malaysia. The Team MRF driver finished over 13 minutes ahead of Australian Mark Pedder and is now just 10 points behind team-mate Jan Kopecky in the run for the championship.
The Delhi-lad got off to a fantastic start and won the opening stage of the rally convincingly only to suffer from problem with his rear suspension soon after. Kopecky was already out of the running with a suspension break on the very first day when it landed hard on a bump in Special Stage 6. So the onus was on Gill to bring one of the Team MRF cars on the top and that’s exactly what he did.
At the end of the Rally Gill said, “The rear suspension stopped working because of the heat. We took it easy and the priority was to make sure one of the cars finished on top. In the second stage (of the day) we started having the problem. By the third it completely collapsed. Malaysia is all about finishing the rally. It’s the most difficult rally of the season. One of the toughest in the world I would say and the team has done a great job so big thank you to Team MRF for the win today.”
The 2014 season of APRC will now head to Japan for the penultimate round which is going to be absolutely critical for Gill for him to defend the championship title. Rally Hokkaido, Japan will take place from 26-28 September.
