Having already made a mark in the motorcycle grand prix racing, Moto3 class and the 125 cc Italian National Motorcycle Racing Championship, Mahindra Racing will now venture into the FIA Formula E Championship that is set to commence in September 2014. The Motorsport division of Mahindra has signed a pact with the organisers and has now become the only Indian team to join the newly introduced zero emission racing series.
In a bid to increase awareness about electric vehicles and help in the development of EV technology, the all-electric race series will include 10 races in the first season in city-centre locations around the world including, London, Beijing and Los Angeles.
Anand Mahindra, Chairman and Managing Director of the Mahindra Group said, “We strongly believe that Formula E can provide an excellent global showcase for our electric vehicle technology. With advanced operations and expertise in electronics, IT, automotive technologies and manufacturing we are already seeing the fusion of this technology into our electric vehicle operations. Racing will further accelerate that trend while Formula E is set to raise awareness globally about the benefits of electric vehicles.”
Mahindra is no stranger to the world of motorsport as well as electric vehicles, with Chetan Maini, CEO, Mahindra-Reva Electric Vehicles set to provide guidance to the Mahindra Racing Formula E Team which will be led by Dilbagh Gill who has been appointed as the Team Principal the only thing left for the team to put in place are the drivers. Reports suggest that former Indian Formula 1 driver; Karun Chandhok is in talks with Mahindra to drive for them.
