Polish F1 driver Robert Kubica crashed badly in a rally car on Sunday morning and is currently being treated for multiple fractures to his right arm and leg.

Robert Kubica has suffered multiple fractures to his right hand and leg and surgeons are currently fighting to save the Lotus-Renault driver from losing functionality to his arm. The F1 driver who is touted to be a potential future World Champion by many veterans of the sport crashed while participating in the opening stage of the Ronde di Andorra rally in Italy on Sunday morning. The Skoda Fabia S2000 rally car Kubica was piloting along with co-driver Jakub Gerber lost control while going over a damp section in the road and hit a wall before ricocheting into a barrier which pierced the car’s footwell. Gerber was able to climb out of the wreckage unhurt but Kubica had to be cut out from the mangled bodywork.

He was then airlifted to the Santa Corona hospital in Pietra Ligure where the world’s best surgeons including hand specialist Igor Rosello are working on the Pole. Earlier rumours even suggested that Kubica’s hand might be amputated to save the F1 driver’s life, but fresh statements by his manager Daniele Morelli indicate that the worst-case scenario would mean Robert will lost functionality of his right arm.

Robert Kubica has shown tremendous form in the past few seasons and has even led the Championship standings at certain points in the seasons. He was the fastest driver on the final day of pre-season testing at Valencia earlier this week, but the accident will mean that Kubica will be missing the next test session in Jerez and may not be fit enough to drive until as late as the season-opening Grand Prix in Bahrain. Bruno Senna, who has been taken on board as the third driver at Lotus-Renault following his 2010 season with HRT will most probably take up testing duties meanwhile. From everyone at ZigWheels, here’s wishing Robert Kubica a speedy and full recovery. We can’t wait to see the man at the wheel of the Lotus-Renault R31 once again.
