While there has been a lot of buzz around the Mobilio, one particular variant that’s getting a lot of attention is the Mobilio RS. It’s the top-trim available on the Mobilio diesel and not some limited edition model. It won’t be available till September too, yet the offbeat RS is much talked about. This could quite trigger a RS variant for future Honda models and specifically the upcoming next generation Jazz that’s scheduled for a launch sometime in the first quarter of 2015. And Honda says that it is under consideration. If the RS variant in the Mobilio does well, it could make a strong case for the Jazz RS.
Sixty percent of the Honda City’s customers have opted for the top-end variant. This, Honda says wasn’t expected by the company as the mid-spec variants generally are the highest selling ones. To capitalize on this new trend, Honda is offering the Mobilio in two top-trims – V and RS. While the V trim gets all the features of a top end variant, it comes on the standard Mobilio. In addition to the top-spec Mobilio’s features, the RS gets an extensive body kit, roof spoiler, projector headlamps, different sportier bumpers, grille and alloy wheels. It’s only going to be sold in the diesel though as much sales of the petrol aren’t expected considering the segment.
But in the Jazz, expect the petrol to get an RS variant too. The split in sales in the hatchback segment doesn’t tilt as much towards the diesel variants as in MPVs. It’s more of a half-n-half split between petrol and diesel and so the Jazz could find a lot of takers for the petrol RS as well.
The Jazz RS gets a similar makeover as the Mobilio RS. Reprofiled sportier bumpers, double barrel headlamps, a new gloss black grille, new alloy wheel designs, a large rear spoiler and plenty of RS badging are part of the RS trim. It’s only a cosmetic upgrade so don’t expect bump in power and torque. The Jazz will share engines and gearboxes with the Amaze and interiors with the City.
