Volvo has pledged to eradicate accident-related injuries and deaths in a new Volvo car by the year 2020. To achieve this goal the Swedish automaker has teamed up with POC and mobile communications specialist Ericsson to develop a new two-way communication system for cars and cyclists.
This innovative technology will be presented at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, next month. This new system uses a prototype helmet and a smartphone app that enables new two-way communication system via Volvo Cloud.
If an imminent collision is detected, both the driver and the cyclist will be warned, thereby, enabling them to take the necessary action to avoid a potential accident. The Volvo driver will be alerted about a nearby cyclist through a head-up display alert – even if he happens to be in a blind spot. The cyclist will be warned via a helmet-mounted alert light.
The Swedish manufacturer states that its partnership with POC and Ericsson is an important milestone in investigating the next step towards building cars that will not crash. By exploring cloud-based safety systems, the company claims that it is getting closer to eliminate blind spots between cars and cyclists thereby avoiding collisions.
Earlier too, Volvo had introduced its City Safety system which is standard on the all-new Volvo XC90. This system is an auto brake technology that assists in reducing or avoiding traffic accidents. The Swedish automaker’s commitment towards reducing accidents has paved the way for this innovative helmet technology concept that will help in saving countless lives.
