German car giant, BMW, has been spied testing its next generation of 5 Series vehicles. The manufacturer is testing the all-new versions of its four existing 5 Series-based car, which include the 5 Series sedan, the estate version, the GT version, and the sports-oriented M version. However, since the estate and GT versions of the 5 Series are not available in India, we will only discuss the sedan and the M Division car, better known as the M5.

After looking at the spy images, it is pretty much evident that the next generation 5 Series will get only a few nips and tucks on the design front rather than some heavy alterations. Nonetheless, the silhouette of the spied vehicle suggests that it will look much leaner and meaner in its upcoming avatar.

Despite the disguised skin, one can notice an aggressive nose that is more hunkered down as compared to the current generation 5 Series, something that we have seen in the design of the current generation 3 Series. There are more 3 Series cues, following BMW’s latest design language where its cars get the headlamps merging into the kidney grille. A few other examples of this are the all-new X3, X5, X6, and the flagship 7 Series, all available in India.

The new 5 Series is underpinned by BMW’s latest modular platform, which they like to call CLAR (CLuster ARchitecture), something they have used in the 7 Series before. The construction will help the ‘five’ lose as much as 100 kilos making it agile and fuel efficient.

As far as the M5 is concerned, it carries the characteristic BMW aluminum mesh alloy wheel with a gloss black finish as opposed to the smaller silver ones from the regular 5 Series. One can also see the cross drilled brake discs, indicative of its performance capabilities and a signature quad exhaust outback.

The next-gen 5 Series will come with plenty of engine options, ranging from 4-cylinders and 6-cylinders to 8-cylinders, globally. For India, the 5 Series could inherit the same motors available with the current variant. Interestingly, the M5 could get an X-Drive version (all-wheel-drive) for the first time in the German car’s history.

The 5 Series will probably make its world debut at this year's Paris Motor Show in October. Expect the Indian launch to take place in mid-2017.
