In most parts of India thankfully we do not have to encounter snow while driving. But if you are planning a trip to one of those hill stations in the winters and are expecting to encounter snow on the roads here are a few tips that should see you through and ensure that you enjoy a refreshing drive through the country side.

1. Driving on snow makes your car react very differently than on tarmac and gravel. The slightest over steering or braking can result in loss of vehicle control. Maintain a very cautious speed and prepare for a manoeuvre much before you have to and turn the steering gradually so that the vehicle does not react suddenly and lose traction.
2. Do not brake the vehicle suddenly as this will lock up the wheels and send you sliding down the road. Apply the brakes gradually to maintain traction on all four wheels.
3. Do not accelerate suddenly as this will result in the drive wheels spinning helplessly on the snow as the struggle for traction. In case of fresh snow the wheels may even dig in and get the car stuck in snow.
4. Ensure the radiator contains anti-freeze
5. Before driving, make sure all windows and mirrors are clear of snow and ice
6. Use dipped headlights in poor visibility
7. Keep a safe stopping distance behind the vehicle in front
8. Keep a careful watch out for other road users especially motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians
9. Keep winter driving safety essentials in the car including cold weather clothing and food as sudden snowing may leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere until help arrives.
10. If you are certain you will be crossing a lot of snow covered roads be sure to equip your car with snow tyres as they help improve traction on snow significantly over normal road tyres.
Always keep in mind that being prepared and not being overconfident while driving on snow can make all the difference between a safe journey and one that ends in a disaster.
