The State Transport Department has banned the use of the phrase Horn OK Please

Trucks and tempos painted in different hues and phrases is a common site in Maharashtra and also in most parts of the country. These vehicles stand apart from the lot for being creative and catch our instant attention. Some phrases are unique and amusing, while some are common. One such common phrase which we have grown up seeing will, however, soon disappear from the rear side of the commercial vehicles.

The State Transport Department is in a mood to bid farewell to the 'Horn OK Please' phrase and has issued a circular which states that displaying this sign is a gross violation of Section 134 (1) of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Rules, which deals with signages to be used on the rear and sides of vehicles.

The department is of the opinion that this phrase gives license to motorists to honk unnecessarily in silence zones such as near the hospitals, schools and colleges. The department has decided to curb noise pollution and has, therefore, decided to impose a ban on the use of this phrase.

A few transport associations have welcomed the ban stating that this phrase was coined to allow vehicles to overtake on narrow roads. These associations are of the opinion that this phrase is not required now as our state now has wider roads, four- to six-lane highways, and drivers can use lights and indicators while overtaking.

Officials will reportedly perform checks starting this week; violation of which will result either in the suspension of relevant permits or fines.
