Isuzu India today unveiled a space cab version of the D-Max pick-up truck at the 2014 Indian Auto Expo. The space cab is a first-of-its-kind pick-up truck to be launched in India. It has two doors and two front seats plus jump seats in the rear, that isn’t very spacious with space for children at best and the deck is available in two types – flat and arched. Isuzu is betting big on the utility pick-up truck segment growing in India and hence is expanding its D-Max range.
Since there are no space cab pick-ups in India, the D-Max space cab has no direct competitors. But the entire premium pick-up segment that includes the Tata Xenon and Mahindra Genio will be in the crosshairs of the D-Max space cab.
The powertrain and other mechanical bits are common in the D-Max range. Hence the Space-cab is powered by the same 2.5-litre intercooled turbo-diesel engine doing duty in the D-Max single and double cabs. It develops 136PS of peak power at 3600rpm and 294 Nm of peak torque between 1800-3200rpm. The D-Max space cab has a 5-speed manual gearbox and gets independent suspension in front and leaf springs at the rear. The pick-up has a payload capacity of 1.2 tonnes and comes in three colours – silver, white and blue.
The D-Max space cab is 5.3 metres long, 1.72 metres wide and 1.65 metres in height. It has a fuel tank capacity of 76 litres.
The D-Max will be launched soon in India and should be priced competitively between Rs 6.8 lakh and Rs 8.1 lakh to slot right between the single and double cab variants.
