The Pajero Sport gets a 5-speed automatic gearbox combined with paddle shifters sending power to the rear wheels

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 4x2 AT launched

Mitsubishi India has launched the Pajero Sport AT at Rs 23.55 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The automatic will only be available as a 4x2 and is cheaper compared to the top of the line 4x4 variant. The Pajero Sport takes on the Toyota Fortuner and Hyundai Santa Fe 4x2 automatics in India. With the 4x2, Mitsubishi hopes to double annual sales to 4,000 units per annum. The Pajero Sport 4x4 with manual transmission is priced at Rs 23.80 lakh now, increased by Rs 30,000.

Under the hood is the same 2.5-litre variable geometry turbo diesel dishing out 178PS of power and a lower 350Nm of torque, 50Nm less than the 4x4 variant. The automatic is lighter though by 105kg as it doesn’t get a transfer case which should compensate for the lower torque output. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed automatic gearbox and you can also take control of shifts via magnesium paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

The Pajero Sport gets double wishbone suspension up front and a 3-link rear setup with stabilizer bars at both ends to keep the 2 tonne SUV well mannered. The 4x2 AT will be more efficient compared to the 4x4 variant which has an ARAI certified mileage of 12.8kmpl. It is ultimately a road car only though for buyers who don’t want access to the exploits of its capable 4x4 variant.

On the inside, the SUV will come fully kitted in top trim with a 2-din audio system with navigation, reverse parking camera and automatic climate control among other features. Last month, the Japanese carmaker launched a limited-edition of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport with a dual tone paint-finish to woo buyers during the festive season. This limited edition SUV was made available in two colour schemes – Flame Red with White and Lemon Yellow with White, inspired by its famed predecessor and was priced at Rs 23.99 (ex-showroom Mumbai).
