Volvo has been working hard to develop new, fuel-efficient powertrains for quiet sometime. This hardwork has resulted in the birth of the new Drive-E powertrain engine which will offer a blend of driveability and low CO2 emissions. From May 2014, all new Volvo models will have the option of the new Drive-E powertrain.

Volvo has announced that the new Volvo V40 will be the first car to be available with this new powertrain which will go on sale in international markets from May onwards. The Swedish carmaker claims that the manual version of the 190PS Volvo V40 D4 equipped with the Drive-E powertrain will return an impressive fuel efficiency figure of 26.3kmpl and will emit just 99 g/km of CO2.

Apart from the standard manual unit, the D4 powertrain will also be available with the new 8-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. According to Volvo, the automatic version of the V40 will return 109 g/km while the automatic V40 Cross Country will emit 112 g/km of CO2.

Volvo will also offer the T5 a front-wheel-drive (FWD) engine, which according to the carmaker, produces a decent power of 245PS. It is also a part of the new Drive-E family, and will come with the new 8-speed automatic unit as standard. This combination will emit 137 g/km of CO2 and return fuel efficiency figure of approximately 20kmpl.

The company has started taking orders for their V40 D4 and T5 models. The production of the V40 D4 will however begin in September this year. Volvo plans to equip all its 2015 line-up cars with the new Drive-E powertrain family.
